DEBORAH CORRAO / L’Observateur / December 5, 1999
As I write this column I am reflecting on the many beautiful people I have met since I began working at L’Observateur. I meant this to be a farewell column ofsorts – but it’s not really farewell. I’ve accepted a new job and won’t be at theoffice anymore, but I’ll keep in touch with you through my column and an occasional article.
Anyway, this week I had the opportunity to share a Christmas luncheon with La Busy Bees, a group of beautiful women I met when I was assigned to write a feature on a garage sale they held in October to raise money for their charitable work. And what a busy group they are! I already feel like Sue Arceneaux and Iwill be friends forever.
I had a running joke that began when I started working at the paper. Every time Iwent out to do a feature on someone, I returned and told my editor Sandy that I had a new best friend. She would laugh about it, but it’s true. Each one of youthat I’ve met in the past year have made an impression on me.
I’ll never forget “The Girls” and the great time I had with them as they celebrated a “White Linen and Lace” birthday last summer. Or Noreen Alltmont, who I still have to have lunch with. Or Mr. Pickle at the Conoco station down thestreet. Or Lena LaCroix, who turned 100 in October. Or Bill Thomson, who cleansup Main Street for us. Or the “Pink Ladies,” who volunteer their time to stylehair for the residents of Evangeline of Ormond Nursing Home.
The list goes on and on.
Each one of you is dear to me and everyone of you has been so gracious to me for doing a job that I love to do. I am sorry that I won’t get to see all of you asoften, but I can’t imagine not wanting to remain a part of your lives.
So I won’t say goodbye. I’ll say to each of you, “Shalom.”God bless all of you during the Christmas season!
