VACHERIE – Members of LaPlace’s Quilting Fans recently presented “Laura, A Creole Plantation,” to Norman Marmillion, general manager of Laura Plantation in Vacherie.
The quilt was a labor of love, designed and created by members of the Quilting Fans. Each member made two blocks for the quilt. Severalmembers were responsible for choosing the colors of the fabrics, photographing the plantation, transferring the image to cloth and assembling the blocks.
The quilt was recently submitted to the Gulf States Quilting Association show held recently at the Ponchartrain Center in Kenner. “Laura, A CreolePlantation” was this year’s community project for the Quilting Fans.
The group decided to make the Laura quilt to be displayed at the plantation after their enjoyable experience during last year’s Br’er Rabbit festival.
In addition to the beautiful colors of the quilt, which coincide with the unique and bright colors of the plantation, the backing of the quilt is actually a souvenir of last year’s festival.
Guests from all over the world “signed in” on the material when they entered the festival. The signed material, complete with Chef John Folse’ssignature, was later turned into the quilt backing.
