HAHNVILLE – The Tigers are playoff-bound on the heels of a heart- stopping, come-from-behind 24-21 win Friday over Thibodaux.
With 21 seconds remaining, a touchdown pass to Carl Raymond was called back on a holding penalty. On the next play, a pass to Darryl Honor got theball back to the 1-yard line and, with five seconds left in the game, Honor rushed for the go-ahead TD.
Hahnville started the game off well, stalling Thibodaux’s opening drive at the visitors’ 41-yard line and HHS received the punt at their own 34.
The play-making drive came with 8:36 in the quarter, when Kade Rogers pulled in a 26-yard pass into Thibodaux’s 31-yard line. Six plays later,Rogers pulled in the 9-yard TD pass with 5:32 remaining in the quarter.
Rogers’ PAT kick was good for the 7-0 lead.
Thibodaux’s next drive again stalled at their own 30-yard line, but the punt set Hahnville back at their own 39-yard line. This HHS drive onlybackpedaled to their own 27, as the Thibodaux defense landed Dawan Landry on three sacks. The Hahnville punt set the visitors back to midfield.Thibodaux struggled again in this next possession, but the visitors had a surprise on fourth down with a faked punt and a sweep right to pick up 20 yards to the HHS 26-yard line.
The second quarter opened with a Cliff Clement pass to his receiver, Robbie Hebert, to the Hahnville 1-yard line. On the next play, WallySanchez barreled in for the tying TD, backed up by the Jeremy Navarre PAT which set the score at 7-7 with 11:40 remaining in the half.
Following an exchange of punts, Hahnville’s next fourth-down punt was partially blocked at the Hahnville 8-yard line with 7:19 remaining in the half. Despite a sack and an illegal procedure penalty, Thibodaux’s DerrickColeman punched it in, with 6:20 remaining in the half. Navarre’s PAT gaveThibodaux the 14-7 lead.
On the next Hahnville possession, the home team pummeled their way downfield, but the Thibodaux defense stiffened until, with 56 seconds left in the first half, Kade Rogers nailed a 42-yard field goal to narrow the gap, with Hahnville trailing 14-10.
Hahnville accepted the opening second half kickoff and, assisted by a timely unsportsmanlike-conduct call on Thibodaux, nudged to the visitors’ 4-yard line.
Then, with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter, a would-be TD pass was deflected by a defender’s long reach and Thibodaux took over on downs.
On the first play, Thibodaux quarterback Cliff Clement had the ball knocked loose and Hahnville linebacker Chris Hawkins landed on the loose ball in the end zone for the gift TD with 6:55 left in the third. Rogers’ PATmade it 17-14 for the Hahnville lead.
Thibodaux was cranked up, however. After an exchange of punts, thevisitors had the ball at their own 7-yard line. Derrick Coleman burst loosefor an 18-yard grab and, three plays later, found daylight for a 72-yard TD run. Navarre’s PAT joined the effort and Thibodaux again led 21-17.Still on fire, Thibodaux lineman Jerry Williams intercepted a Landry pass on first down and stalled Hahnville’s next possession at the home team’s 36-yard line. However, Thibodaux faltered and shanked a bad punt to theHahnville 5-yard line as the third quarter ended.
Avoiding Thibodaux’s earlier mistake, Landry blasted out of the red zone with a pass reception by Rogers which got Hahnville to the 25-yard line.
The drive punched to the Thibodaux 40 before HHS had to punt to the visitors’ 15-yard line with 7:05 remaining in the game.
Thibodaux managed little on their next drive and soon punted to midfield, from where Hahnville tried to crank up. However, the effort stalled withan interception by Joel Jones deep in Thibodaux territory.
The tide turned on that same play, for Thibodaux was called for both interference and unsportsmanlike conduct, and Hahnville regained possession at the Thibodaux 10-yard line with 4:45 remaining in the game.
HHS tries to punch it in but fails and gives up the ball on downs with 2:17 remaining at the Thibodaux 20.
The visitors faced the HHS defense and crumbled, the punt shanking off at the Thibodaux 24-yard line with 1:38 remaining.
