Faith Christian sweeps RCS for title

RESERVE – Faith Christian overcame a quick start by Reserve Christian, defeating the Lady Eagles, 15-13, 15-9, to claim the District 8-V title Thursday afternoon in the Reserve Christian gym.

Faith Christian, which defeated Reserve Christian earlier in the season, improved to 14-6 overall and 2-0 in district. Reserve Christian fell to 11-12 overall and 0-2 in district.

Both teams will play in the State Farm/LHSAA state volleyball tournament this week. Faith Christian will play the District 4-V runner-upThursday at 10:15 a.m. while Reserve Christian takes on District 4-Vchampion Hosanna Christian at the same time.

Reserve Christian jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead Thursday on its second serve behind an ace by Summer Vicknair and two Faith Christian errors.

After Faith Christian pulled to within one, Amber Schlesinger served another ace to make it 4-2.

Faith Christian tied the game on a wide spike attempt by Reserve Christian. Reserve Christian went ahead again on a dink by Schlesinger andmade it 7-5 on a block by Schlesinger. After Jessica Herzog and AngieTucker traded aces, Faith Christian took control of the game with a 4-0 run with Sarah Willis serving.

Mia Bertrand got the run started with a spike down the left baseline and a block by Hayley Elias made it 10-8. A serve later, Jessica Foy delivered akill to give Faith Christian a 12-8 advantage.

Reserve Christian battled back on its next serve to pull to within one.

Vicknair opened the run with a cross court kill. Renee Delaneuvillefollowed with a dink and Mary Venus served an ace to make it 12-11. ButFoy broke the serve with a kill and Herzog followed with a dink, allowing Faith Christian to take a 14-11 lead.

Reserve Christian held off game point and came back to make it 14-13 on a net violation by Faith Christian. But Faith Christian held off two ReserveChristian and got the game winner as Foy’s short serve was dug out wide.

It was Faith Christian that started fast in the second game. Three straightaces by Foy and a Reserve Christian error made it 4-0 before the Lady Eagles used a time out. A serve later, a lift made it 5-0.Reserve Christian pulled to within two on its next serve behind two Faith Christian errors and a kill by Schlesinger. But Faith Christian graduallybegan to pull away, using an ace by Shannon Herzog and three kills by Foy to take a 10-3 lead.

With the score 13-5, Reserve Christian began a rally. An ace bySchlesinger made it 13-6. After a kill by Foy brought Faith Christian tomatch point, Reserve Christian pulled to within 14-9 on two errors and an ace by Venus. But Foy made a save beyond the baseline and Elias followedwith a dink to break the serve with Faith Christian getting the match winner on a Reserve Christian error.

“We came out quick but we just couldn’t hold the lead,” Reserve Christian coach Mike Marix said. “They won on their aggressiveness and we lost onour mental errors. But we didn’t give up. We still have one of our goals andthat is to win the first playoff game in the LHSAA in school history.”
