Rebels out to rebound against Fisher

RESERVE – Having seen its 20-game regular season winning streak snapped by Newman, 22-21, last Friday night, Riverside will be out to start another one and prepare for the playoffs as it travels to Fisher Friday night.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.Last Friday’s game was the first time since the Ridgewood contest in the eighth week of the 1997 season that the Rebels have walked away from a regular season contest with a loss. It dropped the Rebels to 8-1 overalland 4-1 in District 9-2A and clinched at least a tie for the district title for the Greenies.
The game was as close as the score indicated with the Rebels holding a 291-290 edge in total yards. But the teams came to those totals indifferent fashions as the Rebels ran for 274 yards while Newman passed for 174. Casey Remondet ran for 102 yards on 14 carries for the Rebelswith Brandon Delaneuville adding 10 carries for 64 yards. DamianMelancon passed for 18 yards and added 75 yards on the ground.
The Rebels are the second straight St. John Parish team that Fisher willhave faced. The Gators are coming off a 47-12 loss at West St. John lastFriday. The loss was Fisher’s ninth straight this season and 17th in thelast 18 games and dropped the Gators to 0-5 in district play.
Fisher was held to 102 yards by the Rams, 97 which came on the ground.
The Gators were held off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter and committed seven turnovers including five fumbles. The defense allowed298 yards, 173 through the air.
Fisher had a relatively inexperienced team. In the backfield are seniorsRobbie Hunter at quarterback, Junius Chauvin at running back, Clayton Pizani at fullback and Wilford Wyman at wing back in the wing-T. SeniorsChase Guidry and Ronald Dufrene provide the blocking up front.
The defense has given up 45 and 47 points in its last two games. Juniorlinebacker Jerry Victoriano and sophomore cornerback Ryan Bundy, the two who scored both of Fisher’s touchdowns last week, lead the way.
Sophomore defensive tackle Nick Thibodeaux and Pizani lead the charge up front.
The bi-district playoffs begin next Friday. Pairings will be announced bythe LHSAA Sunday.
