LHS looks to grab district title

LUTCHER – Defeating St. James is often hard enough. What might be just ashard is keeping your focus on the next game after doing so.

That is the task facing Lutcher this week, coming off a 25-17 victory over the then-fourth ranked Wildcats that clinched a tie for the District 9-3A title. It was the Bulldogs’ first win over their cross-parish neighborssince 1995 and improved them to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in district play.

Now, the Bulldogs will try to claim the district title outright when they travel to Donaldsonville for the season finale Friday night. Kickoff isscheduled for 7 p.m.Thomas Ricks completed nine of his 22 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown. Jerron Wishom had 36 yards to lead the Bulldogs’ rushingattack that gained 82 yards. The Bulldog defense held a Wildcat offensethat had been averaging 368 yards a game to 193 yards, minus 14 in the fourth quarter. Lutcher also forced two fumbles to set up scores.Lutcher will be taking on a Donaldsonville team that dropped a 38-0 decision to E.D. White last Friday, dropping its record to 3-6 overall and1-2 in district. The Tigers 70 yards in total offense and made just sixfirst downs. On defense, the Tigers allowed 371 yards, 230 on the ground,and 21 first downs.

Donaldsonville has struggled this season putting points on the board, especially in district play where the Tigers have scored 14 points in three games. They have been shut out twice in those three contests.That offense is led by junior quarterback Terrance Brown, a 1,000-yard passer in 1998. Brown will look to hook up with receivers Ronnie Jarvisand Edmond Joseph. Tailback Matt Darville and fullback Mike Lymon will bethe Tigers’ main ball carriers.

On defense, Donaldsonville is led by its line of Dustin Schexnayder and Mike Gipson at the ends and Ronald Alsay and Terrance Dorsey at the tackles. Filling the gaps is linebacker Tony LeBlanc.

St. Charles Catholic -E.D. White

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic will look to close the 1999 season on ahigh note as it hosts District 9-3A rival E.D. White Friday night.Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Thomas Dupuy Stadium.The Comets are coming off a 19-13 upset of then-11th ranked Christian Life last Friday night. The win improved the Comets, who are 0-3 indistrict play, to 2-7 overall and broke the team’s six-game losing streak.

Nick Monica ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Toby Jacob. The Comets finished with201 yards in total offense.

The St. Charles Catholic defense allowed 440 total yards, including 325yards passing by Christian Life quarterback Stefon Lefors, but also forced four turnovers. Andy Cupit and Chris Martin both intercepted passes in theend zone to end scoring threats by the Crusaders. Martin’s interceptionwas his seventh of the season and the 11th of his career.

E.D. White’s defense also came through in its 38-0 district victory overDonaldsonville last Friday. The Cardinals held the Tigers to 70 yards intotal offense, 17 on the ground. On offense, Eric Tate had two touchdownsrushing while Jon Zeringue had one running and one receiving. Jon Hymelalso had a touchdown run as the Cardinals gained 230 yards running the ball and 371 overall.

The win improved E.D. White to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in district play.The Cardinals run out of a formation familiar to local fans – the wing-T.

E.D. White has a number of options out of the backfield, including Tate,Zeringue, Hymel and Justin Chiasson.

Senior quarterback J.J. Tabor guides the attack. Junior tight end SchafferRobichaux and senior split end Trey Hebert are two of his go-to receivers.

Marc Montet and Jake Rodrigue provide the blocking.

On defense, the Cardinals are led by senior linebacker Nick Grabert and senior defensive back Brandon Mackey. James Wilcox is one of the leadingpunters in the area in Class 3A.
