Hahnville holds on to defeat Brother Martin

BOUTTE – Hahnville edged out a 23-21 win over the Brother Martin Crusaders, evening off their season record at 4-4.

Skyler Boyle carried for 85 yards to lead the Hahnville running game while Dawan Landry posted 285 yards passing with 14 completions in 28 attempts and two touchdowns. Hahnville receivers also rolled up stats asKade Rogers picked up 77 yards. Aaron Alexander had 78 yards and MarkYoung rolled up 104 yards.

On the Brother Martin side, their offense consisted mostly of the running skills of Philip Brock who posted 125 yards, although 97 of those yards were by halftime, after which the Hahnville defense contained him for much of the second half.

The Crusaders made it to the end zone first with 8:31 in the first quarter, capping their opening drive from the opening kickoff reception. In eightplays, the Crusaders moved downfield. Six of those plays were by Brock’srunning. At the end, Stephen Lagasse hauled in a 36-yard pass for thescore. However, an illegal procedure call nullified the play. Three playslater, Brother Martin punted.

With Landry at the helm, the Tigers struggled in their own territrory, having to punt back to the visitors. Brother Martin’s Lagasse returned thepunt 4 yards to the Hahnville 20. It took five plays for Brock to plunge inon a 6-yard scoring play with 3:07 remaining the first quarter. A pointafter kick by Gerry Provance posted a 7-0 lead for the Crusaders.

An exchange of punts brought the ball back to the Tigers’ hands and started at their own 22-yard line, Hahnville pressured the Crusaders to the Brother Martin 9-yard line. From there, Rogers attempted his firstfield goal of the evening but it was blocked and the score remained 7-0 Brother Martin with 8:31 left in the second quarter.

Another exchange of punts and Hahnville again found themselves threatening to score after a drive which took them from their own 36 to the Brother Martin 20-yard line. Rogers’ field goal fell short and with 3:16remaining, it was beginnigf to look like a scoreless first half for the Tigers.

However, all was not lost as after the Crusaders’ ineffective possession and punt, Hahnville brought the ball down, mostly on Rogers’ pass receptions, to the Brother Martin 10-yard line. From there, Landry plungedin for the score. The extra point failed and Hahnville trailed 7-6 going intohalftime.

Brother Martin took the opening second half kickoff and poweref their way to their next touchdown on a drive from the Hahnville 45. That’s whereRoss keller picked off a Landry pass and the Crusader’s Brock posted a 40- yard pass play for the score with 9:55 on the third quarter clock.

The Tigers, though, began waking up from their sluggish first half play and from a drive beginning at their own 32, Hahnvillle boomed downfield with Boyle and Darryl Honor leading the charge. Finally with 7:24 remaining,Young burst out with a 50-yard touchdown play. The 2-point conversionpass play failed and Crusaders clung to a 14-12 lead.

After shutting down Brother Martin’s next drive with a minus 19 yards, Hahnville began their next scoring drive at their own 38-yard line. It tookthree plays before Landry connected with Young on a 38-yard pass for the touchdown. The 2-point conversion pass succeeded and the Tigers finallyjumped to the lead with 5:33 left in the third period. Brother Martin nextdrive after trhe kickoff stalled after 12 yards gained thanks to the increasing Hahnville defensive pressure.

When next the Tigers got the ball, possession was maintained for nearly five minutes going into the fourth quarter. From their own 33, Hahnvillecrept downfield with Honor and Boyle leading the pack.

Finally with 10:27 left in the game, Landry popped over the line from 10 yards out. However, a holding call nullified the touchdown and Hahnvilleended up with another field try, again unsuccessful.

Brother Martin took over possession at their own 16 and edged as far as their own 30 before Nick Cannon snared an interception at the Crusader 14-yard line with 6:50 left in the game. That interception set upHahnville’s next field goal try by Matt Cummins who posted three points on the board, a vital score that saved the win.

Brother Martin’s next possesion began with a touchback and the Crusaders taking over from their own 20-yard line.

The visitors boiled off the time as much as possible for the next three minutes and ended up with a 4-yard pass reception for the touchdown by Brock. The extra point was good and Hahnville clung to their 23-21 leadwith 43 second remaining Following the onsides kickoff, snared by Rogers, all the Tigers had to do was burned off the clock to keep their victory.

Hahnville travels to Destrehan Friday.
