Hahnville celebrates Senior day with sweep of ESJ

BOUTTE – Hahnville and East St. John moved their varsity volleyball gameup Thursday to allow the Lady Tiger players to prepare for Homecoming festivities. The Lady Tigers got the festivities started early, celebratingSenior Day with a 15-8, 15-2 victory over the Lady cats in District 9-I play.

Hahnville improved to 11-13 overall and 1-1 in district play. East St. Johnfell to 3-21 and 0-2.

With the score tied at 5 in the first game, the Lady Tigers took a 7-5 lead on a Lady cat error and an ace by Angela Raziano. Three serves later, anace by Jackie Witmer and a block by Liz Landry made it 9-6.

East St. John cut the deficit to two on an ace by Sandy Shields beforeHahnville came back with a kill and a block by Landry to increase the lead to 12-7.

East St. John broke the streak with an ace by Jennie Debowes. After aservice error and a lift by the Lady Cats, Witmer delivered a kill to make it 14-8. Raziano then served her second ace of the game for the winner.Hahnville quickly took an 8-0 lead in the second game. On the Lady Tigers’second serve, Raziano had three aces and Witmer delivered a block. Aserve later, a dink by Jennifer Hicks and an ace by Landry made it 8-0.

After East St. John got on the board on a Lady Tiger error with TheresaCambre serving, Hahnville came back on its ensuing serve with kills by Hicks and Witmer and an ace by Lindsey Yochim to take a 11-1 advantage.

Debowes answered with a block but Witmer responded with an ace to keep it a 10-point contest.

With Bridget Humphreys serving two serves later, Landry delivered a kill to make it 14-2. Hahnville coach Mendi Leboeuf then brought in seniorFallon Cancienne, who had been out with an ankle injury, to serve in her final home game. Cancienne delivered, serving an ace for the matchwinner.

That ace was Hahnville’s 10th of the contest with Raziano leading with five. The Lady Tigers committed only one service error.Leboeuf pointed out Witmer, a senior, and Flora Brown, a freshman who has stepped in for an injured senior, as players who stood out Thursday.

“Flora has stepped up and is doing a great job,” Leboeuf said.

Hahnville travels to district leader Destrehan Tuesday afternoon. East St.John travels to Destrehan next Thursday.
