BOUTTE – For Hahnville, the Tigers’ 22-15 come-from-behind victory at South Terrebonne Friday night could not be any bigger.
The victory broke a three-game losing streak and evened the Tigers’ record at 3-3 overall and improved them to 1-2 in District 7-5A play.
“It was tremendous,” Hahnville coach Lou Valdin said. “It keeps us alivefor the playoffs and evened our record. “It’s like a new season now. Wehave a four-game season. If we can finish with a winning record in thosefour games, I think it will get us into the playoffs.”More so than improving Hahnville’s playoff chances, it also gives the young team confidence after losing its last three games in the final minutes. TheTigers had lost to Northside, East St. John and Central Lafourche by a totalof eight points.
“For a young team, to come back late, after losing three heartbreakers, to come back and win this one like we did, shows we are getting better,” Valdin said.
The Hahnville offense struggled to get the ball in the end zone for most of the game but came through when it counted, in the final minute. Takingover at the South Terrebonne 20 after recovering a fumble by the Gators on a punt return, the Tigers drove to the score in the final two minutes trailing 15-14. Darryl Honor, who rushed for 202 yards and threetouchdowns on 19 attempts, got the game-winner on a 3-yard run.
Dawan Landry, the second-leading passer in the River Parishes, had 72 yards to go over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
The Tigers defense kept the team in the game, holding South Terrebonne to 241 total yards and forcing five turnovers.
“We didn’t play well offensively the whole game but in the most important part of the game we played good,” Valdin said. “The defense played goodmost of the game and kept us in it.”Hahnville will again travel to the bayou this week to play South Lafourche.
The Tarpons are coming off a 21-12 non-district loss to Rummel, dropping to 3-3 overall. The Tarpons remain 2-0 in district play.Rummel’s Darren Parquet rushed for 301 yards and three touchdowns against a usually strong South Lafourche defense. The Tarpons had alloweda district low 70 points through the first five games.
That “40” defense is led by all-district and leading tackler Terrence Alario at linebacker. John Boudreaux, the team’s interception leader in1998, also returns. Jon Shaw and Derrick Barrios lead up front withMichael Felarise joining Boudreaux in the backfield.
South Lafourche runs out of the wing-T with deviations. Leading theoffense is sophomore quarterback Nathan Hanberry and a trio of running backs, including Joshua Allen and Devin Lewis at tailback and Anthony Pitre at wingback. Leading receivers are Sterling Mack and tight end AaronMontez. The physical line is led by Trevor Bourg at center and Andy Griffinat tackle.
“We have to play mistake-free on offense and be able to run the football,” Valdin said. “On defense, we cannot give up the big play. Make SouthLafourche drive and work for their points. And we have to win the kickinggame.”Hahnville hosts Brother Martin next Friday.
