Bergeron captures Riverlands Men’s Club championship

LAPLACE – LaPlace’s Brett Bergeron continued his success of 1999 this past weekend, shooting a final round 72 to win the Men’s Club Championship at Riverlands Country Club.
Bergeron had received the Gulf States PGA Junior Tour’s Tommy Moore Player of the Year Award in August after placing first in three tournaments this summer.
Bergeron continued his solid play at the Club Championship over the weekend, shooting rounds of 73 and 74 to tie Vernon St. Amant for thelead heading into the final round. The two were still tied going into 12thhole when Bergeron made a birdie while St. Amant made a double bogey togo three-up. The lead grew to four going into the final hole where Bergeronmade a bogey.
St. Amant finished with a 73-74-75.”It was excited when I won,” Bergeron, who played in the event last year and finished fourth, said. “I wanted to play well and I knew I had a chanceif I started off well. It was a lot different (than the junior tour) becauseyou are playing with guys a lot older than you and have been playing in the tournament longer.”Bergeron will be playing in the Louisiana Junior Cup next weekend at The Bluffs on Thompson Creek. The Louisiana Junior Cup is a Ryder Cup-formattwo day-tournament between golfers from the eastern and western parts of the state.
Bergeron will also be playing in a Gulf States Tournament in Natchez, Miss., over the Thanksgiving weekend.In other action at the Riverlands Club Champion-ships, Steve Luminais edged out Buddy Lee, 242-243, in the President’s Flight. Dean Waguespackbeat out Chris Owens in the first flight, 163-166. Earl Booth won thesecond flight with a 167 while Warren Duffy came in second with a 170.
In the third flight, Dave Carter edged out Larry Echelberger, 171-173. MarkSmith defeated Bobby Roussel in the fourth flight, 174-175.
In the fifth flight, Ralph Bean had the low gross with a 187. Hugh Berryhad the low net with a 143 followed by Hank Bondi with a 147.
In the Ladies Club Championship, Dale Leonard had a low gross of 168.
Phyllis Weinstein and Barbara Guillot had 143s for the low net.
