EDGARD – After his team’s 27-9 victory at Ellender Friday night, West St.

John coach Laury Dupont said he saw his team improve in almost every category except one – turnover ratio.

The Rams rolled up 480 yards in offense with Carl Gauthier passing for 184 yards and three touchdowns. The defense held Ellender in check, notallowing a touchdown until the final minutes. The only blemish on the winwas nine fumbles, eight of which were lost.

“We didn’t play bad,” Dupont said. “We moved the ball the whole night. Wedidn’t punt and we gained over 480 yards. Defensively, we playedagressively. The defense really played well. The overall kickong game hasbeen good and that’s been a surprise for us. We just turned it over. We’restill not playing the way we are capable of playing. I know we are a goodfootball team at times. I just want to see us play a good football game.”The eight turnovers followed a five turnover game against St. James in theseason opener. But the Rams have been able to overcome the mistakes togo 2-0 and maintain their No. 1 ranking in Class 2A.In addition to the three touchdowns through the air, Gauthier rushed for one and had 55 yards on the ground. Brian Lumar caught five passes for 80yards and a score and added 50 yards rushing. Jeremy Lumar, filling in forDonriel Louis on both sides of the ball, caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. Amone Lumar added the third score.”Jeremy has played really well,” Dupont said. “He’s made a couple of goodcatches and has blocked really well for us.”Louis, who suffered a sprain ankle, in the Rams’ jamboree game against Destrehan, saw action Friday before reaggravating the injury. He isquestionable for this week’s game.

West St. John will make its second road trip in as many weeks, travelingto Gray to play H.L. Bourgeois. The Braves are coming off an 18-10 loss atWalker last Friday. Bourgeois jumped out to a 10-0 lead but could notovercome Walker’s Byron Lockhart who ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns. The Braves ran for 143 yards, led by junior Chris Barrow.Bourgeois opened the season with a 6-0 victory at home against East Jefferson. The Braves are playing their first season in District 9-4A afterplaying in District 6-5A the past two years.

David Miller is in first year as head coach and has implemented the I- formation into the offense. Barrow, a quick back, will be the player theBraves will try to get the ball to with fullback Dejean Moses providing the blocking. Senior quarterback Matt Shelly will also try to get the ball tothe outside to speedy receivers Cody Pugh and Delvin Stewart.

On defense, the Braves play a 4-3 with a lot of movement. The Braves lostdefensive end Ranny Davis, an all-state selection last year, but return senior middle linebacker Tim Wolfe. Also back are senior tackle BradLasseigne and junior safety Patrick Stewart.

“We are capable of playing with these guys, we just can’t make mistakes,” Dupont said.
