Destrehan’s defense pitches another shutout

DESTREHAN – The Destrehan Wildcats pitched their second straight shutout, defeating Douglass, 32-0, in non-district action Friday night.

Destrehan improved to 2-0 on the season while Douglass fell to 0-2. TheWildcats had blanked Slidell, 21-0, in Week 1.

Destrehan chose to kick on the opening play giving the ball to Douglass’ quarterback, Joseph Patterson. Patterson was unable to move his team inthe right direction and after four plays, the Wildcats took over on their own 22 yard line.

The first score of the night came a few minutes later when quarterback Ivan Mashia handed off to Adrian Adams for a 5-yard scamper into the end zone.

Destrehan’s second score came when Mashia kept the ball for a 2-yard push-and-fall into the end zone just before the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats soon added two points when Wildcat Lekeith Robinson sacked Patterson for a safety, giving Destrehan a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter.

A third touchdown was made possible a short time later when Destrehan’s Danny Krieger intercepted a pass intended for the Bobcat’s Arille Johnson.

The Wildcats’ again found themselves on the Douglass 2-yard line. Mashiahanded off to Lucky Givens who leaped in for the score.

Destrehan was now up 23-0, but the half was still not over. Yet anotherinterception by Destrehan, this time by Emile Sanchez set up yet another touchdown run by Fred Smith. The first half ended with the Wildcatscomfortably in control, 30-0.

The second half saw changes from the Wildcat bench. Mashia was done forthe night and the Cats were under the direction of junior quarterback Randy Roth.

Early in the fourth quarter a recovered fumble led to a brief rally for Douglass as Patterson passed to James Pernell. However, the drive fellapart when Patterson was sacked for an 11 yard loss.

Destrehan’s final score came on another safety when Edwin Richardson was sacked behind the goal line.
