Eight vying for Miss St. James Parish crown; 12 in teen contest

LUTCHER – The St. James Parish Sugar Queen Committee and Colonial Sugars,Inc. will present 20 girls from across the parish tonight, competing in the St.James Parish Pageant at the Lutcher High School auditorium.
Eight girls will vie for the 48th Miss St. James Parish title while the other 12girls will compete for the eighth Miss Teen St. James Parish title. The themefor this year’s pageant is “Swing Back in Time.” The master of ceremonies willbe Seth Bourgeois of Grand Point, and the mistress of ceremonies will be Heather Roussel of Grand Point.
Brandy St. Pierre and Ashley Deslattes will relinquish their titles as Miss St.James and Miss Teen St. James. St. Pierre is the daughter of Reed and Brenda St.Pierre of Grand Point. Deslattes is the daughter of Mike and Crystal Deslattes ofLutcher.
The contestants in the Miss St. James Parish category are Mary Karolena Belak,daughter of Karlo and Karen Belak of Hester; Brandi Becnel, daughter of Kevin and Dawn Becnel of Vacherie; Holly Murry, daughter of Arthur and Cindy Murry of Gramercy; Katie Cashio, daughter of Bennie and Cathy Cashio of Paulina; Amy Gravois, daughter of Ozane and Darlene Gravois; Misty Boudreaux, daughter of Randy and Pam Boudreaux of Lutcher; Tiffany Roussel, daughter of Douglas and Sheila Roussel of Paulina; and Marcie Louque, daughter of Roger and Susan Louque of Lutcher.
The girls competing in the Miss Teen division are Dawn McClung, daughter of Paul and Tamera McClung of Gramercy; Lindsay Hymel, daughter of Dennis and Lisa Hymel of Vacherie; Tia Jackson, daughter of Tim Jackson and Jill Braud of Gramercy; Libby Taylor, daughter of Brian and Lori Taylor of Lutcher; Crissy Michel, daughter of Mark and Edie Michel of Grand Point; Amy Malbrough, daughter of Wilson and Cindy Malbrough of Grand Point; Heidi Kilburn, daughter of Faron Kilburn and Darlene Faucheux of Gramercy; Direxa Lear, daughter of Chris and Nancy Lear of Paulina; Kassie Waguespack, daughter of Larry and Renee Waguespack of Grand Point; Abby Melancon, daughter of Jason and Cathy Melancon of Grand Point; Jessica Laurent, daughter of Leonce and Melissa Laurent of Gramercy; and Morgan Belak, daughter of Karlo and Karen Belak of Hester.
A panel of certified judges will have the difficult task of selecting our new queens. The contestants compete in interview, personality modeling and eveninggown categories.
The new Miss St. James Parish will be awarded a trophy, a $500 wardrobeallowance and a $250 travel allowance to help the queen as she travels around the state representing St. James Parish. She will be given is a chance tocompete in the 58th Louisiana State Sugar Queen Festival in New Iberia at the end of September.
The first maid in the Miss category will receive $150 and a trophy and travel to the state Sugar Queen Festival as the “Parish Sweet.” The second maid willreceive a piece of jewelry and a trophy.
The new Miss Teen St. James Parish will be awarded $200 cash, a trophy and anexpense paid weekend for her and her parents at the State Sugar Queen contest in New Iberia. In the teen division, the first, second, and third maids willreceive a trophy.
The pageant will be held at Lutcher High School auditorium. Admission will begeneral seating – $3 for children 12 years of age and under and $5 for adults.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. The pageant will begin at 7 p.m. Concessions willbe sold.
