Bergeron captures first overall victory on tour

ALEXANDRIA – LaPlace’s Brett Bergeron made it a trifecta at the Gulf States PGA Junior Tour stop this week at Alexandria Golf & Country Club.

Bergeron shot an even-par 144 and defeated Lafayette’s Patrick Pyle in a playoff to capture the overall title at the Alexandria Junior Invit-ational.

The victory was his first overall championship on the tour. He also placedfirst in the boys’ 14-15 age division, edging out Kevin Jones of Crystal Spring, Miss., by one stroke for his third straight victory in his age group. Bergeron shot even par 72s on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Jonesfollowed his opening 72 with a 73 to finish at 145. Brock Waguespack hadrounds of 89 and 88 to place 40th.

Pyle rallied from an opening round 75 to shoot a 69 in round two and edge out Dry Prong’s Neithaniel Allen by a stroke for the boys’ 16-17 age division title. Reserve’s Steve Luminais shot a 74-77-151 to tieBroussard’s Spence Girouard for eighth place.

Bergeron also shot a 2-under par 70 at Chateau Country Club Thursday at regional qualifying for the Independent Insurance Agen-cy Tournament in Houston Aug. 16-20. Bergeron placed second, two shots back, and will playin state qualifying at Pelican Point in Gonzales.

Bergeron will also play in Gulf States’ Players Champ-ionship Monday at Sherwood Forest in Baton Rouge.

In other local golf news, Andrew Coleman of LaPlace won the rain- shortened 9-11 year-old division at NOGA/Compaq Junior Tour stop at Beau Chene recently. Coleman had a six-hole total of 21 to edge JesseParker by one shot.

At the tour stop at Willowdale Country Club, Dana Berthelot shot a 105 to place second in the girls’ 14-15 age division. Lacey Panepinto placed firstwith a 91.

In the rain-shortened stop at Ormond Country Club, Suzette Tassin shot a 92 to finish seven shots ahead of LaPlace’s Sara Aupied in the girls’ 12- 13 division.
