Acadian band playing at B&C in celebration of reunion

VACHERIE – The Acadian reunion activities in St. James Parish, whichlaunch today with the Bourgeois Family Reunion at Laura Plantation, continues this week with more reunions, dances and soires. On Tuesday, Les Mechants Maquereaux, a six-piece Acadian band from New Bruswick, Canada, takes to the stage at B&C Seafood, 2155 River Road, Vacherie, starting at 1 p.m.Guitarist Roland Gauvin commented, “The times we’ve come to Louisiana, we’ve always had a wonderful time.”Tommy Breaux of B&C Seafood said he is happy to host the group and is already selling CDs of the group’s music, including the special “Si longtemps spar” performed with vocalist Waylon Thibodeaux as a special souvenir of the Congrs Mondial Acadien.

More activities next week include the La Grande Soire Sur La Cote Acadienne at Oak Alley Plantation on Aug. 6. Les Mechants Maquereaux isalso performing at that event, which will also include a twinning ceremony with Grand Digue, New Brunswick, at 3 p.m.For more information on that event call Stacey Atkins at 1-800-442- 5539.

The St. James Historical Society plans a Heritage Day in Lutcher at themuseum on River Road and Lutcher Avenue. Plans include livedemonstrations, music and food. For more information, call LaurieBourgeois at 869-9752.

Finally, on Aug. 8, starting at 8 a.m., St. James Catholic Church will be thesite for a narrative on the landing of the first Acadians in St. JamesParish, a French-language mass, flag-raising ceremony and dedication of a new monument and statue of the Virgin Mary’s Assumption.
