GEOFFREY MICHEL / L’Observateur / July 21, 1999

As I was getting ready to write my article for this week, I had too many subjects to talk about. Being that I had so many, I decided to collaborate themall into one article.

Isn’t it a great story about the USA women’s soccer team? In front of a sold-out Rose Bowl, and after 90 minutes of playing, Brandi Chastain blew a kick past Chinese goalie Gao Hung and the USA beat China. Not only was it awesome eventfor young women to watch and a great promotional event for women’s sports, but they also are great role models for everyone to look up to.

Yet another tragedy was set upon the Kennedys and America when the plane John F. Kennedy Jr. was piloting crashed. The supposed curse on the family lives on.Whether being reckless or thinking he was invincible or simply being naive about flying in less than favorable weather conditions, this is another horrible tragedy for one of America’s first families.

A great bill passed in the state of Louisiana called the Respect Bill. Studentsare required to say Yes Ma’am and No Ma’am and Yes Sir and No Sir. Students whorefuse to say it can be suspended or expelled. I like this bill a lot because itteaches kids to honor and respect for teachers who help you out in life. Justmaybe it will carry over outside the classroom into real life.

This is from the “Say it Ain’t So” department. Minnesota Gov. Jesse “The Body”Ventura said he would referee a wrestling match at a WWF pay-per-view. Thisshould be a surprise to no one. Doesn’t he have enough to do governing the stateof Minnesota? Maybe the $100,000 payday (even if it is going to two charities) convinced him otherwise. He is an embarrassment for the people of Minnesota. As football season approaches us, the odds on the Minnesota Vikings becoming Super Bowl Champions has dropped from seven to two down to two to one. Ithink that may be a safe bet (if they can get past the Saints).

That is what has happened in the last couple of weeks and my opinions about them.
