All former Riverside football players are invited to particpate in the alumni flag football game following the 6:30 p.m. scrimmage Aug. 19 atRiverside Stadium.

The camp is for girls ranging from first grade to high school seniors and will focus not only on the basics of basketball, but the importance of good sportsmanship and a positive attitude during play.

Camp participants will have the opportunity to improve their fundamental skills and knowledge of the game by participating in league games and individual competitions in an atmosphere of learning and fun.

The camp’s director will be Sheremy Dillard, assistant coach of the Gold Nuggets, and the staff will include members of the Xavier women’s basketball team. The cost of the camp is $60 and includes a camp T-shirtand lunch all three days.

The Destrehan High School Basketball Camp will be held at the school gym for boys and girls ages 8-14 July 26-30 from 3-5 p.m. The cost of the camp is $50. For more information contact coach MikeMcNamara at 764-1775.

The St. Charles Soccer Camp will be held July 26-30 at J.B. MartinMiddle School in Paradis. Walk-in registrants are welcomed on July 26.The coaching staff for the camp is comprised of National and State licensed coaches including Jose Budde, Julio Paiz and Neal “Scooby” Daniels.

Camp costs are $125 for the full-day camp (ages 9-16) and $75 for the half-day camp (ages 5-10) plus $10 for early arrival or late pick-up.

The St. Charles Catholic High School Comets Football Camp willbe held for ages 7-13 Tuesday, July 27 through Friday, July 30, from 9 a.m.to noon at the high school.

The camp includes instruction at all positions, weight lifting, camp T- shirt, highlight films, Iron “Boy” contest, touch football games, skill tests, races and a punt, pass and kick contest.

Lutcher High School is holding its annual football camp the week of July 27-30. The camp is the oldest football camp in the River Parishes.Registration will be held Monday, July 26 at the Dogs’ Den from 9 a.m. to 5p.m.The camp fee is $40 for ages 7-13 and will include instructions at all positions, camp T-shirt, iron boy contest, touch games, weightlifting, Punt, Pass and Kick, films, chalk talk, flexibility exercises, etc.

The camp will start Tuesday, July 27 at 9 a.m. and will continue thru theremainder of the week ending each day at noon.

The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring several huntersafety classes this summer. Classes will be held at the St. John ParishSheriff’s Office, Division Headquarters Squad Room, located at Deputy Barton Granier Drive in LaPlace.

Class times will be from 5:30-9:15 p.m. Saturday’s class will begin at 8a.m. at Nick’s Shooting Range in Garyville. The schedule of classes is as follows: July 27-29, 31; Aug. 17-19, 21;Sept. 21-23, 25; Oct. 19-21, 23; and Nov. 16-18, 20.There is no charge for these classes. Registration is mandatory. Ascension of Our Lord School in LaPlace will be hosting a Great Britain Celtic Soccer Camp August 2-6 on the fields of Ascension of Our Lord from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m.The camp will provide individual skills, understanding the game, passing, ball control and many other skills including tactics. The goal is to providefun while improving the game.

A half-day camp for boys and girls ages 9-12 will be held for $95 a player and a full-day camp for 11 year-olds and up will be held for $145 a player.

Drinks and a T-shirt will be provided. Participants are asked to bringwater bottles. Registration forms are available at the Ascension of OurLord rectory and the Summer Camp office.

Southwest Louisiana will be hosting the south’s largest open basketball tournament in Lake Charles, La. August 7-8. The event will be held between these venues: Washington-Marion High School, Lake Charles-Boston High School, Ray D. Molo Middle School andMLK Recreation Center. The event will involve a men’s division at $180 perteam and a women’s division at $150 per team. Participants are to be 18years and older. Both divisions will qualify for MVP and all-Tournamentawards. The men’s division will be awarded first to sixth place and thewomen’s division first to fourth place. The deadline for the entry fee isFriday. After the deadline there is a $50 late charge.The Golf Classic will be held August 7 at Mallard Grove Golf Course. Theentry fee for this two-man scramble is $75 per person and is due by July 15. The fee takes care of cart fee, lunch and gift bags.As part of the tournament, the second annual Youth Drug Free Celebration Day will take place Aug. 7 in the Washington-Marion High Schoolgymnasium at 1 p.m. Mayor Willie Mount has agreed to play in a celebrityHORSE game with former Harlem Globetrotter Billy Ray Hobley. The NBA’sAnferney “Penny” Hardaway is also scheduled to appear.

The purpose of the showcase is to aid young players in their quest to play college or pro baseball. A staff of qualified college coaches and pro scoutswill conduct field testing and games. Each participant will receive anevaluation of their playing abilities and this information will be put in a catalog and sent to area colleges and pro organizations.

A seminar will be conducted explaining how players can enhance their chances of being seen by college and pro organizations. Academicrequirements at each level of college ball will be explained. Other topicswill be explained and parents are urged to attend the seminar.

The showcase events are open to players freshmen through graduated seniors. The top players in each regional showcase will be invited to anational showcase at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 2-3, 1999.Regional sites in the area are Houston, Aug. 7-8; Tyler, Texas, Aug. 14-15;Dallas, Aug. 21-22; and Shreveport, Aug. 21-22.For more information contact Frank Dorner at (281) 469-6721.

Special Olympics Louisiana’s new “Share the Victory” motor vehicle recycling program allows anyone in Orleans, Jefferson, St.

Bernard, St. Tammany and St. Charles parishes to turn extra or unwantedvehicles into “something special for Special Olympics.”An individual can call the “Share the Victory” toll-free number and Special Olympics will arrange to tow away their motor vehicle for free.

The vehicle will be recycled into the funds needed to support the year- round program of sports training and athletic competition for mentally- retarded children and adults in Louisiana.

Vehicles can be in any condition to qualify as long as the owner has the title. Consumers may also be able to take advantage of a tax deduction asthe fair market price of the vehicle is considered a tax deductible donation to Special Olympics.
