LUTCHER – Calling all cars! If you’ve got a classic car, custom car or a street rod, you can show it off this weekend at a car show to be held in Lutcher Park on Sunday.

Sponsors of the show are also inviting owners of motorcyles, street machines, race cars and trucks to display their vehicles at the show.

Trophies will be awarded first, second and third places along with special awards. Entry fees are $20 per car, $15 for a motorcycle and $5 for showbikes. Booth spaces are available for $25.The show will run from noon – 6 p.m. with awards at 5 p.m.Proceeds from the show will benefit the Save Our Children Carnival Parade. For more information, contact Laverne Gordon at 225-869-8696. * * * LAPLACE – The Senior Day Program at River Parishes Hospital and Maison Oaks Assisted Living Apartments if sponsoring their third annual Senior Health Festival on Thursday, July 1, from 8:30 a.m – 12:30 p.m. at theKnights of Columbus Hall, 346 Fir St., LaPlace.The topics for two morning sessions are “Financial Exploitation, Power of Attorney and Alternatives” presented by Jane Arieux Thomas, attorney- at-law, and “Long Term Care Insurance” presented by Sandy Onellion, agent with Physicians Mutual Insurance.

The keynote speaker will by WDSU news anchor Alex Gifford who will entertain with colorful historical facts about Greater New Orleans.

The festival will also include over 25 booths with senior related information and services, such as hearing and blood pressure screenings, make-up tips for seniors, healthy eating tips and nutritional information.

* * * LULING – Don’t forget to get out and celebrate your patriotism at the ninth annual St. Charles Parish Independence Day Celebration to be held July 3 atthe West Bank Bridge Park in Luling from 6-9 p.m.(See EBB, page 3B) A professional fireworks display that seems to get better and better each year is set for about 8:45 p.m.Refreshments will be sold by local non-profit organizations.

* * * Applications are now being accepted for the National Guard”s high school drop-out program. This five-month residential educational program,offered at Camp Beauregard in Pineville and the Gillis Long Center in Carville, is open to 16-18 year-old males and females who are drug free and have no felony convictions.

The Youth Challenge Program provides the students with uniforms, meals, lodging and a weekly allowance. Although emphasis is placed on preparingto pass the GED exam, the students also are required to participate in physical fitness training, team sports, volunteer community projects and life skills training.

The course is rigorous and demanding, but program leaders say it is an ideal environment for teenagers who are committed to turning their lives around.

* * * NEW ORLEANS – A married couples retreat, sponsored by the Family Life Apostolate of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, will be held July 30 through Aug. 1 at the Ave Maria Retreat House in Crown Point.Msgr. Ignatius Roppolo and a team will serve as retreat directors. Themefor the weekend is “Called to be One in Christ.”Msgr. Roppolo has been a longtime supporter of the Family Life Apostolateand has been particularly interested in its work with married couples. Hehas taught at Notre Dame Seminary and is currently working with the McFarland Institute in pastoral counseling.
