LAPLACE – Cretin Homes took advantage of five walks and three East St.
Charles Post 366/195 errors to score nine runs in the first inning on its way to an 11-1 victory in Second District East play Wednesday afternoon.
Cretin Homes improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in district play. Post366/195 fell to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in district.
Dustin Braud (3-0) went the distance for Cretin Homes, walking four while striking out seven. Justin St. Pierre homered to right field on the secondpitch of the game for Post 366/195’s lone hit of the game.
Cretin Homes came back in the bottom of the inning as Brian Horvath led off with a single to left, stole second and went to third on an errant throw. After a strikeout by Jason Waguespack and a walk by Matt Fisse,Post 366/195 starter Vince Maggiore struck out Braud for the second out.
Nick Monica followed with a walk to load the bases.
Maggiore then got Jason Gonzales to hit a check-swing roller to second base. Marty Boudreaux charged the ball but had it go under his glove intoright. Horvath and Fisse scored, giving Cretin Homes a 2-1 lead. “When you walks two guys, one error becomes overwhelming,” Post 366/195 coach Mark Willoughby said. “It’s hard to overcome. We got thepitch we wanted and if we make that play, we’re still up 1-0 and it’s a different ballgame. We can’t let these things happen. We have to makethings happen for us and we haven’t done that.”With Ricky Madere at the plate, Gonzales took off on a steal attempt with Monica coming in on the throw to second. Madere then took a 3-1 pitch andlaunched it over the left field fence, making it 5-1 Cretin Homes.
Jason LaPorte kept the inning alive by drawing a walk and Toby Jacob followed with a single to center.
After a walk by Horvath loaded the bases, LaPorte came in on a wild pitch. Waguespack thenbrought in Jacob and Horvath with a single to center.
Keith Grubbs came in to relieve Maggiore and gave up a single to left by Fisse. Grubbs then struck out Braud but Todd Picou’s throw to first washigh, allowing Waguespack to score to make it 9-1.
Jacob walked and Horvath beat out a single to short with two outs in the second but Grubbs got out of further trouble by getting Waguespack to fly out to center.
Cretin Homes added two runs in the third. With one out, Braud walked andMonica followed with a home run to right center, giving Cretin Homes an 11-1 lead.
Post 366/195 threatened in the top of the fifth. Jason Pick reached tolead off the inning as Justin Chauvin dropped his fly ball to center and Shane LaBoyd, who came in to relieve Grubbs in the fourth, was safe at first as Jacob bobbled his grounder to third.
Braud got Donnie Hollis to pop up to first before walking Boudreaux to load the bases. Braud then struck out St. Pierre and Danny Krieger to end thegame via the 10-run rule.
“We were very fortunate, we were able to take advantage of an error and some walks,” Cretin Homes coach Frank Monica said.
“We really didn’t pound the ball but we got some timely hits. And Braudthrew some quality pitches when he needed too.
“I’m pleased with the way we are playing. We are doing the little thingsright and not making mental errors.”
