Weber helps East squad to split

PORT BARRE – Lutcher’s Jenee’ Weber reached base all four times up to help the East squad to a split at the Louisiana Softball Coaches Association’s All-Star doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The East took a 4-0 victory in the nightcap after the West rallied for a 3- 2 win in the first game. The East now leads the overall series 11-4.Weber played four innings in the first game, two each in center and right fields. She played five innings in the second game, starting the game incenter for three innings before moving to right for the final two innings.
Weber went 1-for-2 with a run in the first game and 2-for-2 with a run in the nightcap.
“It was fun,” Weber said of playing her last high school game before going to Southeastern next year. “I had a real good time. I was kind of sad butI’m going to college and I’m looking forward to that.”Lewis Grady of the River Parishes Umpires Association was behind the plate for the first game and at third base for the second game.
Reserve Christian’s Ashely Holmes was honored between games for being selected to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Academic all-State composite softball team with a 4.0 grade point average.Harold Keller of Get High on Life was the guest speaker at the All-Star Banquet held Friday night.
Central’s Julie Wiese was named the East squad’s MVP after going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three runs batted in. Sacred Heart’s MandyMullins was the West MVP after combining to throw shutout ball for seven innings over the two games, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five and picking up the win in the first game.
St. Amant’s Jessica Holaway and French Settlement’s Duffi Mathernecombined on the shutout in the second game. Holaway went four innings,allowing two hits. Matherne went three innings, giving up three hits whilestriking out two.
The East had the first chance to score in the second game as Grant’s Jessica Findlay was hit by a pitch with one out. Weber followed byslapping a single past third to put runners at first and second. Findlay wasthen thrown out trying to steal third and after Weber went to second on a wild pitch, Ouachita Christian’s Brienne Berry grounded out to end the inning.
The East jumped out on top with three runs in the bottom of the third.
With two outs, Bernice’s Abbra Mack reached as West starting pitcher Lacy Remedies of Southwood bobbled her grounder and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Mack then came in as Central’s Tracye Thompson reached on a two base error by first baseman Kayci Keller of Central Lafourche on a throw by Berwick’s Sammi Wilkes. Wiese followed with a double to right to scoreThompson and scored on a single to left by West Monroe’s Deni Zeigler.
The East loaded the bases with one out in the fourth against Mullins. JohnCurtis’ Samantha Black led off with a walk and reached second on an errant throw by Parkway’s Joanna Crowson.
After a sacrifice by Ruston’s Hilary Hay, Tioga’s Kelly Wright beat out a bunt to load the bases. But Mullins came back to strike out St. Amant’sJenny Haydel and got Crowville’s Ragen Russell to pop up to end the inning.
The West had its best scoring chance in the top of the fifth as Sulphur’s Leslie Venissat and Berwick’s Michelle Adams led off with singles.
Matherne kept the shutout alive, however, by getting Sulphur’s Jaime Peveto to pop up, striking out South Beauregard’s Jada Goins and getting Anacoco’s Robyn Haymon to fly out to center.
Weber led off the sixth with a single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a sacrifice by Hay and a pop up by Matherne, Wrightsingled to center to bring in Weber to make it 4-0.
In the first game, the West took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Teurlings’ Stacie Dufour opened the inning with a liner into the right- center field gap for a double, was sacrificed to third by Crowson and scored on a grounder to second by Haymon.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Weber kept the inning alive for the East by beating out a chopper in front of the plate.
Weber moved to second as Zeigler reached on an error by Southwood’s Danielle McRae at second. Wiese then lined a triple to right field, scoringWeber and Haydel running for Zeigler to give the East a 2-1 lead.
The West tied the score in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Mullinsdrew a walk from Berry, stole second, went to third on an error by Haydel during a rundown and scored on a single to center by Crowson.
The East threatened in the top of the seventh as April Townsend singled with one out. Weber’s bunt attempt was dropped by Venissat but she wasable to throw down to get Townsend at second. Zeigler then popped up toshort to end the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Barbe’s Rikki Fontenot beat out a single to third. Berwick’s Michelle Adams followed with anothergrounder just inside the third baseline.
Haydel threw past first on the play with Fontenot coming all the way around with the winning run.
