Smith, from Thibodaux, used the running portion of the race to pull away from last year’s champion, Ronald Dufrene. Smith led after the first twomiles and held a slim lead coming into the transition area after the 10- mile bike. Dufrene took the lead coming out of the transition area beforeSmith regained it before the one-mile turnaround point of the second two miles. Smith crossed the finish line in 51 minutes, 32 seconds.”It was hot,” Smith, who was competing in his first du-athlon and fourth race, said. “‘I wanted to bring it down a notch so I wouldn’t getdehydrated. I knew he (Dufrene) was good on the bike so I wanted to staywith him because I knew I was the stronger runner.”The race was held along old U.S. 51 with the transition area at theCajunland Swamp Tours. Competitors went out one mile before comingback. They then biked five miles out before turning around and repeatingthe run.
