At my house we are finally wrapping up school activities and getting ready to move on to summer camp and different gymnastics schedules.
I’m sure that, like me, many of you have attended end-of-the-year recitals, awards banquets, etc., etc., etc.It seems like we are caught up in a whirlwind of activity as our children go through their rites of passage. The little rituals and ceremonies are theway we mark the milestones in our children’s lives as they complete another year in school, another year of music, or dance, or sports.
Many of you are proud of those accomplishments and look forward to the public recognition the children receive as they win an award or participate in a recital.
As the activity dies down, we look forward to summertime plans…vacations, camp, summer sports like swimming and baseball, community theater summer productions, reading programs and other special events at our libraries.
This summer my granddaughter will be going to gymnastics every night as she prepares for state, regional and national competitions. She will alsobe attending a day camp sponsored by the St. Charles Parish RecreationDepartment, a couple of specialized weekly camps and library programs.
I feel so fortunate that we live in an area where these opportunities are available to our children – that there are people who are willing to share their time and talents to enrich our children through art, music and sports.
While there are some costs involved in some of these summer programs, many are free or very reasonably priced.
I urge you to take advantage of these opportunities for your children this summer. Being involved in organized activities helps our children toexpand their horizons as they learn new skills and make new friends during the summer months.
And it helps us, as parents and grandparents, to feel secure knowing our children are participating in rewarding activities.
