This past Friday I attended my school’s high school graduation. My friends and Icried as we listened to some of our best friends speak. It signified a closing toa very fun part of their lives. Yet at the same time of this closing, new doorsare being opened and new horizons are beginning to be explored.
Although very exciting, leaving home and starting a new life can also be nerve racking for the hundreds of graduating seniors in the St. John area. In a coupleof months you will be packing up and leaving the only life you’ve ever known.
As you do this, many important decisions will come up. Out from under thewatchful eye of your parents, life will be a little freer. It may seem like thereare no consequences or prices to be paid, but let me assure you that every decision and choice you make reflects upon who you really are. Character iswhat you do when no one else is watching.
Following the leader is the easy way out. It takes a much stronger person to goagainst the crowd and do what they know is right.
So, as you pack your bags and step out into the world, I challenge each of you graduating seniors to hold on to the morals and standards you were brought up with. Even if high school was a time when you did follow the crowd, college canbe a brand new start for you.
At a time where our nation is in a moral tailspin and no one takes responsibility for his own actions, let’s be the generation that stands up for what we believe and choose not to conform to the image that the world has for us. It seems like everybody believes that our generation is doomed to fail ateverything. So now there’s only one thing to do, prove them wrong.
