Law enforcement agencies win grants

CONVENT – More than $400,000 will find its way to the bank accounts of St. James Parish in the name of law enforcement, according to U.S.Senators Mary Landrieu and John Breaux.

The Gramercy Police Department will receive $139,457, and the St. JamesParish Sheriff’s Office will receive $277,116 as part of the $1.2 millionbeing presented across Louisiana as part of the U.S. Justice Department’sCOPS program.

COPS, or Community Oriented Policing Services, was developed by the Justice Department to reduce crime by putting more police officers on the streets.

In Gramercy, two more full-time positions will be filled. For the sheriff’soffice, four more officers will be added.

Breaux said, “This round of COPS grants lends a real helping hand to our local law officials across Louisiana, enabling them to recruit top- qualified officers.”He added, “Our fight against crime gets a little easier each time our police forces put more officers on our streets.”Landrieu added, “We are winning the war against crime in Louisiana because we have more officers working hand-in-hand with our communities.

“These COPS grants help provide Louisiana’s police departments with the resources they need to make our neighborhoods safe.”
