LAPLACE – An 18-year-old Baton Rouge man was arrested on a warrant for attempted second-degree murder.

His alleged victim, Sam Williams of LaPlace, sustained five gunshot wounds after he said Steven J. Weathersby stood over him with a .38-caliber revolver and fired into him during a dispute over a dice game.

Three of the shots passed through Williams’ body and the other two remain in him.

Lt. Michael Tregre said that on April 27, neighbors at Davis Trailer Courtreported hearing gunshots there, but deputies found nothing at that time.

Rumors surfaced, however, that someone had been shot, and Williams was found at his home, recuperating from his wounds a week after the incident.

Tregre said Williams apparently sought medical treatment elsewhere and the gunshot wound incident failed to reach St. John police authorities, asis standard practice. He said that is under investigation.Weathersby, of 1255 West Roosevelt St., Baton Rouge, was tracked down and arrested on Monday.
