Parish plans memorial for crash victims

LAPLACE – The public is invited to attend a special memorial service on behalf of the victims of the May 9 bus accident, set Sunday at 3 p.m. in theEast St. John High School gymnasium.Sunday is also proclaimed as a parishwide Day of Prayer by Parish President Arnold Labat.
Twenty-two persons died in that Mother’s Day crash, and more than a dozen remain hospitalized.
An emissary from Gov. Foster’s office is scheduled to relay Foster’s wordsof condolence, and several speakers and local church choirs are expected, according to Lt. Mike Tregre of the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office, who iscoordinating the event, which is expected to last one hour.
The memorial service is a cooperative effort of the St. John ParishCouncil, the Parish President’s office, Sheriff Wayne L. Jones’ office, theSt. John Council on Aging, Place DuBourg, the St. John Clergy Alliance, theSt. John office of the American Red Cross and the St. John Parish SchoolBoard.
In addition, a special Mass is set today at 5:30 p.m. at Ascension of OurLord Church, LaPlace, led by Archbishop Francis Schulte. Another isplanned Tuesday at St. Peter Catholic Church, Reserve, at 7 p.m.
