CONVENT – A potentially challenging issue failed to come before the St.
James Parish Council Wednesday evening. Turn Services, Inc., a shipcleaning operation, is seeking to begin operations in St. James Parish. The location of its operation is the point in question. Steve Miller of theU.S. Coast Guard was scheduled to appear before the Council in oppositionto the proposed site but was unable to appear.
It has been proposed that Turn Services be located near water intake valves.
“I believe that representatives from the towns of Lutcher and Gramercy should contact the Coast Guard to address the issue.”, said CouncilChairman Timothy Roussel. “I don’t think anyone is opposed to a shipcleaning operation in the parish, but it should be located five to 10 miles away from the water supply,” he said.
The deadline for public comment on this issue ended Thursday, May 06, 1999.
With the absence of Sixth District Councilman Elton Aubert, the Council voted 6-0 to do the following: Request that Alternate Route 7 of the Department of Transportation and Development State Project 700-99-01332 be selected. This project isdesigned to develop a hurricane evacuation route for South Louisiana.
Alternate Route 7 is one of nine proposed locations for this thoroughfare.
It will involve four-laning from the relocated US 90 to LA 3127, to the Veterans Memorial Bridge. In addition to evacuation relief, Alternate 7will provide relief for vehicles traveling to and from the Thibodaux and Houma areas.
“The present LA 20 is a sub-standard extremely hazardous highway from Vacherie to Chackbay”, said Roussel.
