Sailor struck, killed by passing vehicle

PAULINA – A Ukranian sailor was struck and killed by a passing motorist April 8 while walking along Louisiana Highway 642, just south of Louisiana Highway 3125.

A spokesman for Louisiana State Police Troop A reported that Vhleriy Volchkov, 50, of Nikolabu, Ukraine, was walking with a fellow crewman north along the two-lane roadway at 9:51 p.m., coming from their shipdocked in Paulina.

James Wilson Jr., 33, 1635 Second St., Lutcher, was driving north on thesame road and struck both Volchkov and his friend, Poperekov Gennadiy, from behind. Volchkov was fatally injured in the accident. The other manwas taken to St. James Parish Hospital in Lutcher for treatment of hisinjuries.

Capt. Artemenko Alexander of the Venezia of Malta was notified, as wasthe Ukranian Embassy. No charges were immediately filed against Wilson.The investigation is continuing.
