SCC takes three of four in tournament

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic completed its final preparations forDistrict 9-2A play over the weekend, taking three of four games in the St.
Charles Catholic Tournament.
After dropping the tournament opener to Mandeville, 10-4, the Comets bounced back to defeat South Terrebonne, 12-2, and H.L. Bourgeois, 10-7,Saturday; and DeLaSalle, 12-2, Sunday, to improve to 13-3 overall.
“We’re pleased with the pitching staff,” St. Charles Catholic coach FrankMonica said. “We developed a little depth and that will help us in ademanding district. After Thursday, our run production was good. “We won three of four and that was our goal for the tournament. We didn’twant to have our pitching staff overworked and we wanted to get ready for district. A totally new season starts for us Tuesday. Everything up tothis point was to prepare us for this.”The Comets got their bats untracked early against South Terrebonne Saturday morning, scoring six runs in the second inning. With one out,Darrin Gaubert, who came into the game with nine hits in his last nine at- bats, walked.
Courtney Bonura bounced a single up the middle and Nick Monica followed with one over the third base bag to score courtesy runner Ricky Madere with the first run of the game.
After a fly out by Weber, Brandon Laiche lined a 1-1 pitch by Gator starter Brody Matherne over the center field fence for a three-run home run.
Jarrett Maurin reached as catcher Ryan Trosclair dropped his pop up in front of the plate and Steven Faucheux followed with a shot over the fence in right-center field, giving the Comets a 6-0 lead.
South Terrebonne got a run in the third off Comet starter John Price as Craig Duplantis and Jonathan Aucoin reached on infield singles and Dupre singled to left to score Duplantis. Lee Duet walked to load the bases withtwo outs but Price got Dusty Dupre to ground out to second to end the inning.
Dupre dropped Wayne Stein’s lead-off fly ball to center for a two-base error. The Comets took advantage as Gaubert singled to right, scoringStein to make it 7-1. Madere, running for Gaubert, advanced to third asBonura followed with a double to left-center field.
Andre Guifou came in to pitch for the Gators and after getting Monica to fly out to center, gave up a run-scoring single to center by Weber. WithLaiche at the plate, Bonura came in to score as Trosclair threw down to second to get Weber trying to steal, making it a 9-1 game.
Trosclair homered for the Gators in the top of the fourth. Price led off thebottom of the inning with a base hit to left and two outs later, came in on Bonura’s home run to left-center, giving the Comets a 11-2 lead.
After Price retired the Gators in order in the top of the fifth, Laiche walked with one out in the bottom half of the inning. One out later,Faucheux singled to right and Price lined one to left, bringing in Laiche to give the Comets the victory by the 10-run rule.
Price improved to 3-1 on the season with the win, allowing five hits while striking out three and walking two.
In the victory over H.L. Bourgeois, Stein and Gaubert homered and Laichegot the victory in relief of Toby Jacobs. In the tournament finale againstDeLaSalle, Weber hit a home run and had four RBIs with Braud picking up the victory.
The Comets play at district rival Riverside tomorrow.
