Risinger, clutch hitting lead Tigers past Wildcats

LUTCHER – Dewey Matherne’s grand slam capped off a five-run fifth inning for Hahnville, helping the Tigers to a 12-1 victory over Destrehan in the Lutcher Bulldog Classic Sunday morning.
Hahnville (9-5) took two of three games in the tournament, losing to Lutcher before defeating Riverside, 6-4, Saturday. Destrehan (5-7) wasswept, losing to Lutcher, 7-1, Friday and Riverside, 4-3, Saturday.
Hahnville opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. ErikDonnaud drew a walk from Destrehan starter Gavin Morel to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by Brian Risinger. Donnaud then camein as Matt Caire tripled to right field.
Tim Sirmon followed with a walk and stole second. After Teddy Schmillpopped up to first, Kade Rogers walked to load the bases. Brandon Kellythen reached on an error by third baseman Michael Catalano, driving in Sirmon.
A walk by Chris Hawkins brought in Rogers, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Bruce Jones came in and struck out Matherne to end the inning.
The Tigers broke the game open with four runs in the fourth. Donnaud ledoff by getting hit by a pitch, went to second on a sacrifice by Risinger and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
After Greg Hogan was hit by a pitch, Sirmon doubled to left field, bringing in Donnaud. Hogan came in on a wild pitch and Schmill followed with agrounder to third to score Sirmon.
Rogers kept the rally going by drawing a walk. Justin St. Pierre thendropped Kelly’s fly ball to left as Rogers scored, making it 7-0.
Risinger retired the first seven batters he faced, striking out four. AvrienVeneralla broke the string with a single to third with one out in the third and advanced to second on an errant throw by Kelly. One out later, St.Pierre singled to right, scoring Veneralla to make it 7-1.
Hogan robbed Craig Naquin of a hit in the fourth, making a diving catch of his fly ball to right-center to lead off the fourth.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Schmill struck out and reached on a wild pitch, Rogers walked and Kelly singled to right to load the bases against Destrehan reliever Randy Roth.
Hawkins followed by lining a bunt past the mound, bringing in Schmill to make it 8-1. Matherne then took Roth’s first pitch and drove it over theleft-center field wall, giving the Tigers a 12-1 lead.
Risinger allowed a lead-off double to center by Jason Pick in the bottom of the inning before retiring the next three batters to end the game.
Risinger held the Wildcats to four hits while striking out six and walking none in improving to 2-1 on the season.
“I felt good today,” Risinger said. “I was trying to throw the ball in thereand let them hit it. I know I have a good defense behind me.”Hahnville coach Britt Oubre said it was a good win going into District 6- 5A action this week.
“I hope it carries over,” Oubre said. “You always like to go into district ona positive note.”
