Rams take second at Sugarcane Relays

EDGARD – West St. John got victories from Dehaven Duronslet, ArlandoComminie, Rysean Brown and its 1,600-meter relay team to place second at the Sugarcane Relays Friday at West St. John Stadium.Christian Life edged the Rams, 106-100, for the boys’ team title. JohnCurtis was third with 94 points, followed by Fisher with 43 and Country Day with 38. St. James was seventh with 33 points.Christian Life also took the girls’ competition with 160 points, easily outdistancing second place Ridgewood which finished with 77 points.
Country Day had 60 points to place third, followed by St. James with 52and Fisher with 45. West St. John was sixth with 44 points.Duronslet was selected as the meet’s field MVP after capturing both the long and triple jumps. Duronslet had a jump of 20 feet, nine inches to winthe long jump and had a jump of 43-0 in the triple jump. Teammate JamarBailey placed third in the triple jump with a jump of 39-8.
Donavon Pierre placed second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-0.
Raymond Mason of Christian Life won the event, clearing the same height in fewer attempts. John Corosi of Fisher won the pole vault with a vaultof 11-6. St. James’ Ross Becnel placed fourth, clearing the bar at 8-0.Christian Life’s Stefon LeFlors took the javelin with a throw of 174-5. St.James’ Kylan Young was second with a throw of 156-1, followed by West St. John’s Terman Howard’s attempt of 152-8. The Crusaders also took theshot put with a throw of 50-6 by Terrell Browden. Coy Miller of the Ramswas fourth with a throw of 41-8 1/2. Teammate Anthony Antonio wasfourth in the discus with a throw of 109-1.
In the track events, Comminie took home the 110-meter hurdles title in a time of 15.48 seconds. Brown won the 400 meters with a time of 51.35seconds. St. James Chad Smith out-ran the field in the 100 meters,crossing the line in 10.91. West St. John’s Abrom John was third in 11.38.Derrick Gros of St. James placed second in the 200 with a time of 22.59.Korosi was named the meet’s track MVP after winning the 3200 meters, placing second in the 1600 and third in the 800.
In the relays, West St. John crossed the line first in the 1600 with a timeof 3:38.72, ahead of Christian Life’s 3:38.85. The Crusaders defeated theRams, 1:31.53-1:32.50, in the 800 and also won the 400.In the girls’ competition, West St. John’s Niesha Green had a jump of 15-91/2 to win the long jump. Green also took the triple jump with an effort of32-5.
Tiffany Peterson of St. James took the discus title with a throw of 31-111/2. West St. John’s Ireon Bethancourt was fourth with an effort of 69-81/2. Shamel Nelson was second in the shot put with a throw of 31-11 1/2,followed by West St. John’s Oneka Lewis’ 31-2. Jamie Sutherland of St.James placed third in the javelin with a toss of 89-9.
In the track events, Crystal Stipe captured the 400 meters in 59.84. St.James’ Brandy Lewis was second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 19.19, while teammate Ariel Adams finished the 1600 in 7:08.70 to placethird.
Christian Life’s Shandra Freeman was named the track MVP after taking both the 100 and the 200.
In the relays, St. James’ 1600-meter relay team placed third with a timeof 5:00.63. Christian Life placed first in 4:31.13. The Crusaders alsoplaced first in the 800 and the 400.
