RESERVE – St. John the Baptist Parish Students of the Year, science fairand spelling bee winners were recognized at the school board’s regular meeting Thursday.

Each year the state Department of Education conducts the Student of the Year program to select and honor outstanding students throughout the state. Each school selects an outstanding student in grades five, eight and12, and from there each local school board selects one outstanding student from each level to represent the parish in regional competition.

Students of the Year for 1998-99 at the fifth-grade level are Tariane James, Fifth Ward Elementary; Brittani McClain, Garyville/Mt. Airy MagnetSchool; Keimira Thomas, West St. John Elementary; Airel Anderson, EastSt. John Elementary; Marlena Dozier, Glade School; Danielle Champagne,LaPlace Elementary and Danny Cutno, John L. Ory Magnet School.Eighth-grade winners are Shakila Bazile, Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet School;Artrena Radcliff and Stacey Peterson of Glade School and Heather Stewart, Leon Godchaux Junior High.

Twelth-grade winners are Karma Bailey and Danielle Louis, West St. JohnHigh, and Jennifer Wright, East St. John High.Top winners at each level selected to represent the parish in regionals are Danielle Louis, Artrena Radcliff and Danielle Champagne.

The school board recently held its annual spelling bee competition and recognized winners of the contest, for grades K-8.

Kindergarten winners were: Myraneisha Williams, East St. JohnElementary, first; Nakia Ricks, John L. Ory Magnet School, second; andTroiesha Combre, St. John Child Development Center, third.First-grade winners were Travis Bell, Glade School, first; Trolonda Clark, John L. Ory Magnet School, second; and Tierra Alexander, LaPlaceElementary, third.

Second-grade winners were Shantrella Cooks, West St. John Elementary,first; Kyle Cote, John L. Ory Magnet, second; and Frank Kerner, LaPlaceElementary, third.

Third-grade winners were Brittney Sorapuru, West St. John Elementary,first; Vincent Glorioso, John L. Ory Magnet, second; and Brett Abbate,Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet, third.Fourth-grade winners were Marissa Gordon, West St. John Elementary,first; Desney Dunes, Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet, second; and JonathanNecaise, LaPlace Elementary, third.

Fifth-grade winners were Marlena Dozier, Glade School, first; Brennon Davis, John L. Ory Magnet, second; and Troy Miles, East St. JohnElementary, third.

Sixth-grade winners were Jennie DeCuire, Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet,first; Ryan Stipe, LaPlace Elementary, second; and April Delahuassaye, John L. Ory Magnet, third.Seventh-grade winners were Ryan Waguespack, Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet,first; Carla Lewis, West St. John Elementary, second; and Banielle Butler,Leon Godchaux Junior High, third.

Eighth-grade winners were Zachariah Landry, Leon Godchaux Junior High, first; Tanya Legaux, West St. John High, second; and Lance Gerard, GladeSchool, third.
