LaPlace native wins Bronze Medal Award for work with NISTL’Observateur / February 24, 1999Alvin C. Lewis, a native of LaPlace, a former resident of Reserve and a1959 graduate of Southern University, was recently awarded a Bronze Medal Award by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) division of the Department of Commerce in Gaithersburg, Md.

The Bronze Medal Award is the highest honorary recognition available for presentation at NIST. The award recognizes work that has resulted in moreeffective and efficient management systems, as well as, the demonstration of unusual initiative or creative ability in the development and improvement of methods and procedures. It also is given forsignificant contributions affecting major programs, scientific accomplishment within NIST, and superior performance of assigned tasks for at least five consecutive years.
Lewis, director, Civil Rights Office, OD, was recognized for outstanding management of the equal employment and affirmative action programs for NIST. He has been instrumental in efforts to help NIST keep its focus onthe identification and solution of real problems in civil rights and equal opportunities. Through his many years of dedication and professionalism,he has contributed significantly to the overall institutional health of NIST through his commitment to diversity and to ensuring an open and fair work environment for all NIST staff.
Lewis has worked at NIST for 28 years. He has held the position ofDirector of the Civil Rights Office since 1980. He previously worked thereas a mathematical statistician and an operations research analyst.
Lewis currently resides in Rockville, Md., with his wife Rosalie, also aReserve native. Both are graduates of Our Lady of Grace.
