LAPLACE – Four local students did their part recently to help “Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Litter Free.”East St. John Elementary’s Corey Joseph, Ethel Schoeffner Elementary’sTimmy Schaeffer and Albert Cammon Middle’s Tyler Quaranta and Evan Satterlee were among the students statewide to have their drawings included in the Department of Environmental Quality’s 1999 Anti-Liter calendar.

Joseph, a fourth-grader from LaPlace, had his picture featured with the month of November 1998. Joseph drew an alligator saying to “KeepLouisiana Clean.””The Louisiana yarddog,” Joseph said in explaining why he chose the alligator. “We should keep Louisiana clean and pretty so it doesn’t turninto a wasteland or a big dump,” he said.

Schaeffer, also a fourth-grader, drew a picture of a person picking up garbage with the sun pleading “We are the future, don’t destroy it!” There is also a duck with a six pack holder wrapped around his foot pleading to get it off.

“We drew drug free and free posters and I got the idea,” Schaeffer said.

“The duck with the six pack I got from commercials.”Quaranta, a seventh-grader, had his poster featured in January. Quarantadrew a picture of a magnolia bloom over the state of Louisiana with the caption “Keep Louisiana Clean.””I wanted to make it look good to show what it would look like if it was clean and how good clean stuff can look,” Quaranta said.

Satterlee is also in the seventh grade. His picture is featured withNovember and shows a house in the swamp with the theme “Louisiana is our heritage. Keep it clean.” Satterlee said the picture is of an actualscene.

“I thought of a place on St. Rose Avenue that needed to be cleaned up,”Satterlee said.
