Sherrina Gray is almost as familiar a face as the teachers at Leon Godchaux Junior High School in Reserve.

Gray, 36, has served as Parent Teacher Organization president at the school for two years and volunteers at the school three or four days a week.

“I love being around children,” she said. “And I love to help when help isneeded.”Gray said volunteering at the school also gives her a chance to keep an eye on her own son, Lyle Gray Jr., a seventh-grader at Leon Godchaux. She also puts in a day now and then at East St. John High where her 14-year-old daughter Lynnez goes to school.

“At the high school I have to wear a parent patrol jacket when I volunteer,” she said. “That used to embarrass my daughter, but I thinkshe’s getting used to it.”As a parent volunteer at Leon Godchaux, Gray monitors hallways and handles lunch duty. She has just completed and passed the test required toserve as a substitute teacher, so she expects to be spending even more time with the students.

Gray and her husband, Lyle Sr., who is employed by NALCO in Garyville, attend Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Reserve where she serves as director of the youth choir and works with other leaders in the youth department.

In her spare time she enjoys crafts and plans to chaperone the East St.

John High School marching band at their appearances at this season’s Mardi Gras parades.

She recently attended a three-day conference in Alexandria focused on ways parents and teachers can work together to educate their children.

She said her goal is to get more parents involved as volunteers at Leon Godchaux.
