The sudden departure of St. John Parish recreation director LionelWashington, on the job less than two weeks, leaves a void in the struggling program. While we certainly wish Washington good fortune inhis new job, there remains concern about the future of parish recreation.
Two options are available – to immediately search for another recreation director, or to leave it under the direct supervision of Parish President Arnold Labat.
If a new director is named, that person will only have a few months to make an impact enough to hold onto the position with the new administration taking office next January. The next parish president, eventhen, may replace the position then.
Leaving it in Labat’s hands has its drawbacks, as he is pulled in many directions, and may not be able to devote the full-time attention the department requires.
Meanwhile, the children remain in the middle.
