Six cats, four dogs, ducks, chickens and rabbits are only some of the creatures that live at the home of Mary and Simmie East. If they had any more animals,Mary says, “they might run us out.”Largely due to Simmie’s efforts, there’s a lovely flower garden, too, as well as a great vegetable garden of greens, strawberries, sugar cane, cotton and bell peppers. Simmie and Mary wanted their children to see things grow, andSimmie’s green thumb made it possible.
Mary has her own way of keeping busy. She has been employed with K-Mart for14 years and likes doing crafts for gifts and house decorations as a hobby. Inaddition, she really likes to shop. Getting their education has kept their threedaughters busy. Rosalind has her bachelor of science degree from Nicholls StateUniversity, and Donielle and Lashunda are still attending Nicholls. They all liveat home in LaPlace, and everyone in the family has a job.
At one time Mary worked at the service desk at K-Mart, but now she works in the pharmacy with pharmacists Janice White and Thiel Bueto. That associationand all the interaction she has with other people on the job helps her to find her work rewarding.
Mary and her husband enjoy walks in the woods together as well as going to dinner and church. They are members of the Greater New Plymouth Rock BaptistChurch in Reserve.Back to Top
