Four locals among cream of the crop academically

LAPLACE – Lutcher’s Whitney Hines and Lance Roussel, Destrehan’s Richard Rodriguez and Riverside’s Dustin Zimmer lead a host of River Parishes athletes named to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Academic All-State football team.

Hines, Roussel and Rodriguez were named to the composite team on offense while Zimmer was named on defense.

The four are among 77 athletes chosen to the composite team selected from the players who scored the highest in their respective sport and class. Members of the squad will receive special recognition at theLHSAA-LHSCA Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction ceremonies tonight in the Convention Center of the Radisson Hotel in Baton Rouge.

Both Roussel, a wide receiver, and Zimmer, a defensive back, achieved a 4.0 grade point average. Hines, a tight end, has a 3.9762 GPA. Rodriguez,the Wildcats’ kicker, has a 3.9583 GPA.To qualify for an All-Academic, All-State team, a student-athlete must have achieved a three-year cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or betterand must have been selected for at least one all-district honor.

Each member school principal is also afforded the opportunity of nominating at least two academically deserving individuals who did not receive all-district honors. This year, 551 football players receivedrecognition to the team.

Rodriguez made the Class 5A team as well on offense. East St. Johndefensive lineman Greg Gathers was selected on defense for Class 5A with a 3.1053 GPA. Destre-han offensive guard Wayne Sentilles was selected tothe honorable mention offensive team with a 3.0625 GPA. Lutcher placed four players on the Class 3A offensive squad. Besides Hinesand Roussel, Shane Duhe made the team as a wide receiver with a 3.8095GPA. Lane Zimmer, the Bulldogs’ kicker, was named with a 3.6744 GPA. TheBulldogs also placed Jason Troxclair, an offensive tackle, on the honorable mention squad with a 3.5813 GPA. St. James offensive guard Doug Morvant made the Class 3A offensive teamwith a 3.4761 GPA. On the defensive team, defensive back Tavin Dillonwas named with a 3.6666 GPA. The Wildcats also placed linebacker Philip Jessie and defensive back Kenny Levet on the honorable mention defensive team. Jessie had a 3.000GPA while Levet compiled a 3.2682 GPA.Riverside had three players selected to the Class 2A offensive squad.

Offensive guard Casey Duhe had a 3.5609 GPA. Wide receiver DustyWaguespack achieved a 3.3500 GPA while quarterback Joey Poirriercompiled a 3.9111 GPA. The Rebels also placed center George Murla on thehonorable mention offensive team with a 3.1578.Zimmer made the Class 2A defensive team. Fellow defensive back KennyClement was selected to the honorable mention team with a 3.2307 GPA.St. Charles Catholic had two players selected to the first team offense.Offensive tackle Kenny Ordeneaux had a 3.6363 GPA while offensive guardDarrin Gaubert compiled a 3.2272 GPA. The Comets also had two playersnamed honorable mention – center Aaron Cancienne and running back Wayne Stein. Cancienne had a 3.0714 GPA while Stein had a 3.0476 GPA.The Comets had four players selected to the honorable mention defensive team. Linebacker Steven Faucheux had a 3.5000 GPA. Jason Smith made theteam as a defensive end with a 3.0952 GPA. Joseph Satterlee and RyanSterling made it at defensive back with Satterlee having a 3.3809 GPA anda Sterling a 3.3333.West St. John running back Dehaven Duronslet and linebacker TorrianThomas made the honorable mention offensive and defensive teams, respectively. Duronslet had a 3.0952 GPA while Thomas achieved a 3.0714GPA.
