LAPLACE – Crescent City Baptist held off a second half charge by St.

Charles Catholic to place third in the Lady Comet Tournament with a 52- 41 victory Wednesday afternoon in the Comet gymnasium.

Hahnville (6-1) swept to the tournament championship. The Lady Tigersopened the tournament with a 45-40 win over Crescent City Monday, defeated St. Charles Catholic, 51-36, Tuesday and closed with a 74-19win over Reserve Christian Wednesday.

Crescent City (5-2) also defeated Reserve Christian, 71-19, Tuesday while St. Charles Catholic (2-5) defeated the Lady Eagles, 58-4, Monday. In Wednesday’s game, Liz Dufresne had 18 points to lead all scorers.

Shannon Dolive added 12 points while Sarah Weber and Krista Danos had four points apiece for the Lady Comets.

Kristy Doby and Stephanie Roniger had 13 points apiece for Crescent City.

Sarah Bomar contributed nine points.

St. Charles Catholic trailed 32-19 at the half but began pulling closer asthe third quarter opened. Dolive hit two free throws and Marci Martinfound Dolive underneath to cut the deficit to 10. The teams traded basketson their next two possessions with Danos and Dolive hitting the boards to put back shots.

A free throw by Dufresne, two by Dolive and a jump shot by Weber from the left side brought the Lady Comets to within five. Crescent City madeit 39-32 as the third quarter ended as Bomar found Roniger cutting in.

Dufresne cut the deficit to 40-35 with 5:58 remaining in the game with a 3-pointer from the right side. But Crescent City answered with a three-point play by Jessica Martinez and a jump shot by Doby to make it 45-35 before St. Charles Catholic called timeout with 4:59 left.Dufresne hit another 3-pointer from the left side to bring the Lady Comets to within 48-41 with 51 seconds left. But Tara Brouillette and Ronigerboth hit two free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

“We fell behind by a lot early and it was a constant uphill battle,” St.

Charles Catholic coach Jeff Montz said.

“I told them at halftime about us winning the third quarter. We executedbetter in the third quarter and gave ourselves a chance to make a run late but it just fell short.

“It is all part of the growth process. Crescent City is going to do well thisseason. They have a good ballclub.”The Lady Pioneers showed that early on, jumping out to a 19-4 lead behind their inside game. Nicole Davis and Doby drove in for baskets and Ronigerbanked in a short jumper to make it 7-2 after Dolive had scored on a put back.

Dufresne hit two free throws to cut the deficit to three but Samantha Jordan drove inside and Roniger went inside to make it 11-4. Anotherbasket inside by Roniger would increase the lead to 19-4.

St. Charles Catholic cut the deficit to 10 on a put back by Felicia Farloughand a length of the court drive by Dufresne after a rebound. Doby hit ajumper at the buzzer to make it 21-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Three free throws by Doby would give the Lady Pioneers a 26-11 advantage in the second quarter.

St. Charles Catholic kept the margin at 15 with Weber and Dufresnehitting jump shots and Danos scoring on a put back. Dufresne hit anotherjumper from the left side to make it 32-19 at the half.
