ST. JAMES – St. James and Lutcher both hit the road this week forquarterfinal games.

The Wildcats (11-1) travel to Breaux Bridge to take on the third-ranked Tigers (11-1). The Bulldogs will head further west, going to Lake Charlesto play surprising Washington-Marion (7-5).

St. James is coming off a 40-0 victory over Belle Chasse in the regionalslast Friday. The Wildcats did what they have done all season, jumping outto a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Wildcats finished with 494 total yards of offense. Chad Jasmincarried 11 times for 164 yards and three touchdowns. Phillip Jessie andKenny Levet also had touchdown runs and Corey Webster had a 20-yard scoring strike to Rey Weber in completing 5 of his 9 passes for 103 yards.

Chris Hymel came in and completed both of his passes for 56 yards. Fivedifferent receivers caught passes with Weber catching two for 42 yards.

Jasmin continues to lead the River Parishes in rushing, carrying 179 times for 1,702 yards and 27 touchdowns. Devon Dabney has 422 yards and fivetouchdowns on 54 attempts. Webster has completed 51 of his 118 passesfor 824 yards and eight touchdowns and is the team’s third leading rusher with 380 yards and 11 scores. Weber is the leading receiver with 18catches for 226 yards.

The St. James defense is holding opponents to under 10 points per game.Opponents are averaging three yards a carry and are completing 38 percent of their passes while being intercepted 21 times.

On player who knows about interceptions is Breaux Bridge’s all-state defensive back Domanick Davis, one of the top cornerback prospects in the state and a LSU verbal commitment. In 1997, Davis had eight interceptionsto go with his 111 tackles. Davis can also be found in the offensivebackfield and this year was one of the top scorers in the state with 132 points during the regular season. He twice scored four touchdowns in agame.

Joining Davis in the offensive backfield for the District 6-3A champions is quarterback Jason Berard. On the line are Luke Boudreaux, MarshallRomero and John Wiltz.

The secondary is the strong point for the Tigers. Joining Davis arereturning starters Shelton Parker and Jarvis Williams. Doug Johnson leadsthe linebacking corps.

Breaux Bridge has defeated Jennings (26-6) and Brusly (14-8) in the postseason. Doug Johnson rushed for 112 yards and a score on 13 carriesagainst Brusly last Friday in the regionals. Davis carried 17 times for 87yards and also caught four passes for 51 yards and a score. Berardcompleted 7 of his 11 passes for 87 yards.

St. James and Breaux Bridge met in the regional playoffs in 1997 with theWildcats coming away with a 29-15 victory as Jasmin ran for 140 yards and Webster threw two touchdown passes.

Friday’s victor will play the winner of the matchup between No. 1-RankedEvangel and Amite next Friday in the semifinals.

LUTCHER – Lutcher will be facing one of the most surprising teams of this year’s playoffs. Washington-Marion made the playoffs as a wildcardselection out of District 5-3A with a 5-5 record but has upset 12th- ranked Erath (20-7) and eighth-ranked Notre Dame (27-7) in the postseason.

Washington-Marion returns eight starters from last season. One of thoseis Greg Cole, a multi-purposed threat. Against Notre Dame, Cole scored onruns of 5 and 85 yards and threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Reynard Kennison. Michael Freeman added a 10-yard run as the Charging Indiansrolled to 478 yards in offense. The defense shut out Notre Dame, allowingjust 141 total yards. Notre Dame’s only score came on an interceptionreturn in the first quarter.

Lutcher defeated Booker T. Washington, 48-15, last week. Damian Ursinscored on a 1-yard run and Shane Duhe and T.R. Ricks combined on a 33-yard scoring strike but the Bulldogs trailed 15-14 at the half. The secondhalf was all Lutcher, however, as Ursin scored twice and Wesley Louque, and Dustin Deslatte scored on runs. Whitney Hines added a 32-yard scoringstrike from Risley St. Germain.Ursin led the Bulldogs with 124 yards rushing as Lutcher gained 427 yards in total offense. The Dingo defense held John Carter, one of the leadingpassers in the metro area, to 149 yards and intercepted him six times.

Robert Bleakley, Rodrick Johnson, Ben Martin, Bernard Riley, David Miller and Burnell Gordon grabbed the interceptions.

The winner of the Bulldogs-Indians game will face either Springhill or Independence in the semifinals next week.
