Comets capture second straight district title

NEW ORLEANS – The St. Charles Catholic boys cross-country team made itback-to-back district championships with a victory at the District 9-2A Meet held last Wednesday at the Lakefront course at UNO.

The Comets placed first with 20 points, followed by St. Martin’s with 35and Ecole Classique with 131.

Courtney Baloney repeated as district champion, beating out teammate Abner Sanders in a photo finish with a time of 17 minutes, 18 seconds.

The Comets’ Mike Donnelly was third with a time of 17:25. The three weretied after each of the first two mile markers.

Andre Ory also won All-District honors for the Comets by placing fifth in 18 minutes. The top seven finishers in the district meet are named All-District.

Casey Cassagne placed ninth to qualify for the state meet along with Chris Costantini and Matt Landry. The top seven runners for each team at thedistrict meet qualify for the state meet to be held tomorrow at Northwestern State Univers-ity in Natchitoches. Races begin at noon.The Lady Comets were edged out by St. Martin’s in their quest for theirsecond straight district title. St. Martin’s finished with 26 points whileSt. Charles Catholic had 29.Nicole Guarino placed second in the individual competition with a time of 13:44. Jennifer Pollet was third in 14:16 and Liz Dufresne was fifth in14:26 to achieve All-District honors.

Brandi Catoire, who finished ninth; Jessica Eschette, who came in 10th; and Robin Davies and Crissy Daigre also qualified for the state meet.

“This one was harder because the competition was pretty fierce,” St.

Charles Catholic coach Frank Monica said in comparing the two titles.

“I am really proud of the work ethic they turned in. The girls ran 30-35miles a week and the boys 35-40. The program is making progress, We had48 total kids and that says a lot for the program.”
