LUTCHER – Lutcher had one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A during the regular season.

Now that the state playoffs begin, it does not get any easier for the Bulldogs.

Lutcher, the second-place team in District 10-3A with an 8-2 record, will face sixth-ranked Redemptorist in the bi-district playoffs at home Friday night. Redemptorist finished second in District 8-3A with a 9-1 record,losing only to district champion and seventh-ranked Brusly.

Lutcher, ranked 12th in the state in Class 3A this week, wrapped up second place in the district with a 16-0 victory at home against Plaquemine Friday night. Damian Ursin recovered a fumble in the end zoneto give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead at the half. Lane Zimmer added a 28-yardfield goal and T.R. Ricks put the icing on the cake by hooking up withKenneth Johnson on a 92-yard scoring strike. The Bulldog defense heldPlaquemine to 174 total yards and forced two turnovers.

“When we had big plays we absolutely had to make, we made them on offense and we made them on defense,” Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said.

Redemptorist also made the plays it had to in a 32-14 win over Parkview Baptist last Friday. With starter Shelton Sampson out with an injury inthe first half, sophomore David Plaisance stepped up, rushing for 172 yards and four touchdowns.

Plaisance’s performance showed the depth that the Wolves possess in their rushing attack. With Sampson and Shawn Lambert leading the way,the Wolves are averaging over 40 points per game.

Sampson has scored 18 touchdowns and earlier this season, Lambert gained 177 yards in a 20-13 victory against St. Charles Catholic. That wasone of the few times the Wolves have been challenged this year, winning by an average margin of over 30 points.

“They have some ballcarriers,” Detillier said. “They like to run thefootball.”On defense, the Wolves run four and five-man fronts and like to move people around. The defense is led by its line, especially defensive endsChuck Wilson and Stephen Westfall.

“They are a good solid football team,” Detillier said. “We get a fresh startbut it is a tough draw.”Friday’s winner gets the winner of the Booker T. Washington (NewOrleans)-E.D. White winner in the regional playoffs.
