St. James plans 1999 budget

CONVENT – Public hearings are set Nov. 18 and Dec. 2 on the St. JamesParish annual budget. Approval of the budget is anticipated at thatDecember meeting, Parish President Dale Hymel said.

Hymel delivered his annual budget message at Wednesday’s meeting and outlined more than $1 million in road improvements in the $24.6 millionbudget.

Related to roads, the parish accepted Louisiana Highway 912, near St.

James High School, into the parish road system. The 1/10-mile road dead-ends at a railroad track.

In other activity at Wednesday’s meeting, the Parish Council heard a presentation from Kirk Harrison of Waste Management on cutting down the number of collection trucks and changing routes as a cost-savings measure and to improve efficiency.

The contract change was approved and will go into effect in January.

Also, the state highway department will make improvements to the bridge over the Airline Canal to the St. James Boat Club, as the contract wasapproved at Wednesday’s meeting.

Work completion was also approved for the $200,000 renovation of the St.

James Youth Center, Hymel announced a parishwide toy and gift drive to commence Nov. 23 through Dec. 7, and reports were heard from PortCommissioner Cart Davis and Anthony “Buzzy” Noble of the Economic Development Board.
