RESERVE – Not since 1994 has Riverside had a player pass for more than 1,000 yards and another rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.

It happened Friday night in Reserve, as quarterback Joey Poirrier and running back Casey Remondet added their names to an elite list, as the Riverside Rebels, shut out the L.B. Landry Buccaneers, 35-0.It began with Landry going three and out on their first possession. A shortpunt and a bad bounce gave Riverside good field position at the 48-yard line of the Buccaneers. That’s when Remondet caught a 12-yard screenpass from Poirrier, and ran it up the middle twice, once for 16 yards and another for 10.

Finally, he busted through a massive defensive line led by 6-3, 265-pound Wilbert Smith and 6-5, 280-pound Deshawn Jones for a six-yard touchdown run. With the extra point, it gave Riverside a 7-0 lead with7:41 left in the first quarter.

Landry moved the ball to midfield on their next possession but defensive back Dustin Zimmer nailed the Bucs’ running back with a crushing, open field tackle, forcing the first of four fumbles for Landry, turning the ball over to Riverside.

The Rebels, in return, turned it over to Remondet, who turned it upfield and ran it 33 yards for his second touchdown of the evening. With 4:55 leftin the first quarter, Riverside led 14-0.

A 42-yard attempt midway through the second quarter by Kaleb Mayes went wide left and turned the ball over to Landry.

A miscue from center to quarterback gave the ball back to the Rebels on the Landry 9-yard line, where Britt Waguespack ran it in, increasing Riverside’s lead to 21-0 with 5:48 left in the second quarter.

With time winding down in the half, the Buccaneers turned the ball over again when junior defensive back Michael Cooper ran down a Kevin Oubre pass. On the next play, Keith LeBlanc received a Poirrier pass and side-stepped his way down to Landry’s 26-yard line.

With good play calling and precise execution by the offense, Rusty Richard crossed the goal line with 1:30 left in the half.

In the fourth quarter, Remondet turned the corner and picked up 33 yards, setting up a Brandon Delaneuville touchdown run which made the final score, Rebels 35, Landry 0.

Joey Poirrier was 7-for-13 with no interceptions, while Kevin Oubre was 7-for-17 with three interceptions. Total yards was Riverside 297 andLandry 127. Remondet rushed 18 times for 153 yards.Riverside, 9-0 overall and 3-0 in district, hosts St. Martin’s next Friday inthe season finale.

A victory by the Rebels wraps up the District 9-2A championship.

Riverside already holds the number one seed in the district and will play at home the first week of the playoffs.

Landry, 0-8 overall, plays at Pearl River in District 11-3A play to close out the regular season.
