Local groups get Entergy grants

RESERVE – Entergy awarded $93,000 in grants to more than 160 Louisiana recipients, including eight in the River Parishes.

Bayou Area Customer Service Manager John Adams presented grant checks to recipients from St. John the Baptist, St. James and St. Charles parishes,including the following:

SNIP/Riverlands SPCA – A free spaying and neutering project, sponsored by the LaPlace SPCA to help control pet overpopulation.

Families Reading to Succeed – A project to improve reading skills at Fifth Ward Elementary in Reserve.

Norco Adult Day Care – Funds will be used to hire an extra employee to work with frail, debilitated or elderly clients.

Read to Your Bunny – This home-literacy project is aimed at extending writing and reading skills for students at Gramercy Elementary.

St. John Shade Tree Committee – This St. John Parish 4-H project willuse funds to plant and distribute shade trees throughout the parish.

Reading Round-Up – This nine-week tutorial is aimed at assisting students at Norco Elementary.

St. John Theatre – Funds will be used to construct a wheelchair rampinto the theater, located in Reserve, and also make the restrooms more readily available to the handicapped.

Peer Assistance Learning Study – This mentoring program is aimed at benefiting students at John L. Ory Elementary in LaPlace.Other grants around Louisiana include a cooking class for those with developmental disabilities in Gonzales, a “Teen Issues Day” for parents and teen-age girls in Lake Charles, a home-repair program for elderly in Amite, a family picnic area in Larose, and “The Seven-Minute Ride Program” at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge.

Entergy Louisiana Region Vice-President Jim Bruno commented: “It is exciting to see the imagination of many of our schools and non-profit agencies. We’re pleased to support these programs.”
