LAPLACE – St. Charles Borromeo intercepted fives passes, returning onefor a score, to defeat Ascension of Our Lord, 42-14, in Catholic League action Tuesday afternoon.

Reid Owens threw three touchdowns and was on the receiving end of another. Scott Trabeaux threw two touchdowns for Ascension of Our Lord.It was the Ascension of Our Lord defense that first came up with a big play as Pete Oncale intercepted a Owens pass deep in Crusader territory on St. Charles Borromeo’s first drive.After a Crusader punt, St. Charles Borromeo began driving down the fieldas Owens connected with Michael Bonura for a long gain. Bonura then tookthe pitch on the halfback option and found Owens streaking down the sidelines for the score. Owens found Connor Morel in the end zone for theextra point, giving St. Charles Borromeo a 7-0 lead.Ascension of Our Lord came right back on its next possession. Trabeauxand Daniel LeBlanc connected three times to bring the ball into St. CharlesBorromeo territory. Trabeaux then found Brock Waguespack in the back ofthe end zone for the touchdown. Trabeaux’s pass for the extra point wouldfall incomplete.

The St. Charles Borromeo special teams and defense would combine for thenext score as a punt was downed near the goal line and Trabeaux was chased out of the end zone for a safety.

St. Charles Borromeo took over possession and again began drivingdownfield. A pass from Owens to Bonura set up a touchdown strike toMorel. Owens then passed to Clifton Morgan for the extra point, increasingthe lead to 16-6. Morel would intercept a halfback pass near the end of thehalf to stop a Crusader drive.

Ascension of Our Lord cut into the deficit early in the second half as a penalty in the end zone against St. Charles Borromeo gave the Crusaders asafety, making the score 16-8.

But on Ascension of Our Lord’s following possession, Morel intercepted a Trabeaux pass in the Crusader end zone for the touchdown. The extra pointwas no good, leaving the score at 22-8.

Morel also set up the next score, intercepting a Trabeaux pass and returning it to the one. Owens quickly capitalize, finding Bobby Hyde forthe score. Owens then connected with Jacob Hall for the conversion,increasing the lead to 29-8.

On the Crusaders’ next possession, it was Hyde coming up with an interception. Morgan then found Bonura on the halfback option for thescore. Bonura made a leaping catch of Owens’ pass for the conversion.Ascension of Our Lord trimmed the deficit as LeBlanc took in a short pass from Trabeaux over the middle and weaved his way down the field for the score, making it 36-14.

But St. Charles Borromeo would answer as Bonura found Morgan deep onthe halfback pass and Owens followed with a scoring strike to Hyde in the back of the end zone.

The Crusaders play host to Sacred Heart on Oct. 20.
