LUTCHER – With all the excitement of homecoming festivities, the Lutcher Bulldogs and the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers found themselves facing off on the football field Friday night.

And it was not long before the action was recorded on the scoreboard.

Vandebilt Catholic scored first, but Lutcher scored most. The Bulldogswon their homecoming game, 41-27.

Vandebilt’s Drew Himel ran wild in the first quarter.

First he caught a 78-yard scoring strike from Clint Schexnayder – the extra point made it 7-0, then he returned a punt 54 yards for the score.

That left Lutcher looking stunned, bewildered by its special teams play and the ease of Vandebilt’s ability to score.

The second quarter must have been a wake up call for Lutcher because the Bulldogs quickly went to work. They pounded the ball into the heart ofVandy’s defensive line and quickly began to eat up yardage.

Down on the 2-yard line Lutcher’s Damian Usrin got the call, and he punched it in for a score with 11:55 remaining in the half. The point afterwas good and the score was now 13-7.

Now what was once frustration quickly turn into confidence for Lutcher, and Jerron Wishom found the end zone from the 5-yard line after a combination of well-executed plays.

Lutcher led Vandebilt Catholic 14-13 at the half.

The third quarter saw a barrage of points for Lutcher.

Ursin scored on a 1-yard run with 10:05 remaining and Lane Zimmer ‘s point after made it 21-13.

Ursin again got the call and romped 39 yards for the score, and after a failed point after attempt the Bulldogs led 27-13.

Lutcher’s final score of the third quarter came on a 70-yard fumble return by Rick Bleakley. Zimmer’s kick made it a 34-13 game.Vandebilt Catholic scored first in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run by Matt Matherne. The extra point made it a 34-20 game.But Lutcher came back as William Adams scored on a 1-yard run with 5:09 left and Zimmer kicked the extra point.

Vandebilt scored its final touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run by Brian Adams with 1:51 remaining.

With the win, Lutcher moves to 5-1 on the season. Vandebilt Catholic fellto 2-4.

Ursin ran for 157 yards in the game, and Lutcher had 357 yards in total total offense. Vandebilt Catholic managed 317 yards in total offense -160 on the ground and 157 through the air.
