LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic overcame a scrappy Reserve Christiansquad Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lady Eagles, 15-7, 15-12, Saturday morning in the Lady Comet gym.

St. Charles Catholic improved to 14-3 on the season while ReserveChristian fell to 8-3.

Marci Martin led the Lady Comets offense with 11 assists and three aces.

Shannon Dolive had 11 kills and two digs. Nicole Scontrino was the topdefensive player with two digs and two blocks.

Ashley Holmes and Katie Millet had two kills apiece for Reserve Christian.

Holmes also had an ace and was the Lady Eagles’ top defensive player.

St. Charles Catholic looked like it would pull away early, using a kill byScontrino and an ace by Martin to take a 3-0 lead. But Reserve Christiancame right back, tying the score on an ace by Holmes and a kill by Summer Vicknair.

The Lady Comets again pulled out to a three-point lead behind a tip by Krista Danos and a Reserve Christian error. The Lady Eagles again pulledeven on three errors by the Lady Comets.

St. Charles Catholic then went ahead to stay on a cross-court kill byNicole Rome.

An ace by Kristen Clement, a kill by Danos and two Reserve Christian errors made it 11-6 in favor of the Lady Comets.

After a tip by Holmes closed the gap to 11-7, St. Charles Catholic usedfour errors by Reserve Christian with Cristin Clement serving to take the game.

The lead bounced back and forth early in the second game with Danos tying the score at 2 with a volley into the left corner. An ace by Danos tied thescore at 3 before Reserve Christian took advantage of three straight St.

Charles Catholic errors to take a 6-3 lead. Martin ended the run by settingup Dolive for a kill.

St. Charles Catholic rallied two serves later to take a 7-6 lead on twoReserve Christian errors and a kill into the back row by Sarah Weber. Akill by Danos and an error by Reserve Christian gave the Lady Comets a 9-7 lead.

That lead continued to grow with Martin serving two breaks later. Dolivehad a kill, Scontrino added a spike off a block and Martin served two aces to bring the Lady Comets to match point at 14-8.

But Reserve Christian refused to go down, breaking the Lady Comets serve on a kill by Holmes and coming back to close to within 14-10. A save byAngie Tucker prevented the Lady Comets from getting the winning point on its next serve.

The Lady Eagles continued its rally, pulling to within 14-12 on two St.

Charles Catholic errors. But a spike by Scontrino that was returned intothe net gave the Lady Comets the serve back and Dolive delivered a kill off a block for the winning point.

“I thought we had two pluses,” Reserve Christian coach Mike Marix said.

“We played together and we didn’t quit any. I told (St. Charles Catholic)coach Michelle (Dearmitt) and Teri (Hruska) congratulations and go win state so that we can say we played a state championship team.

“I think we fared well. One of our goals was to better our points in thesecond game and we did that. It was a great situation going into district.It was a good tuneup. I am proud of them and glad we had the opportunityto play St. Charles and see where we at heading into district play.”
