One disturbing note which came out of the Hurricane Georges episode was the report that authorities in the Dominican Republic either failed to, or decided not to tell their people the storm was coming. The logic was so asto not panic the public. Instead of then panicking, then dying, they justdied.

In this country, everyone knew. Most local stations and all the majornetworks, Cable News Network and The Weather Channel saturated the airwaves with detailed, frequent reports.

Certainly, there are shortcomings in the American news media. They chokeus with scandal and non-news. Yet, when the people absolutely need toknow something, we tell them.

We will continue to do so. It’s our job.So, when you hear people talking about the “irresponsible press,” just remember who keeps you informed.
