Like many teen-agers, this past summer I went to camp. I traveled to St.Simon’s Island, Ga., to attend FCA leadership camp. I didn’t really know whatto expect, but I was pleasantly surprised with everything. The grounds weregorgeous, the people were nice and the speakers were motivational. From June28-July 3, my days were packed with huddle meetings, sports competitions and interesting speakers.

Let me explain a little about FCA. It stands for the Fellowship of ChristianAthletes, but its membership is not limited to athletes. The mission of FCA is”to present to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church.”I traveled to Georgia with a group of students primarily made up of students from Destrehan High School. Our wonderful chaperons were Mr. and Mrs. JeffLind and Darla Rebowe. They take part in the Destrehan FCA, which is veryactive.

The main speaker at camp was a young, funny preacher from Tennessee named Chad Sparks. The message that touched me the most was one in which hetalked about how to be successful. He said there are only two requirements: tocopy the people who are successful and to develop a total mindset on what you want to accomplish. He said that if young people would do these two things, and put their faith in God, they could be successful in anything they put their minds to.

I encourage all students to participate in their FCA. If your school doesn’thave one, start one. Remember, you need not be an athlete to take part in FCA.Their home address is Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 8701 Leeds Road, Kansas City, Mo., 64129.And finally, I want to thank Gary Zeringue, a teacher at Destrehan High. He notonly informed me about the camp but made it possible for me to attend. I can’twait to go back next year.
